Why only 30 amps?

When we picked up our CC last week, the technician told us when we're plugged into 50 amps to only set the inverter to 30 amps. Could someone please explain why to me? Thanks!

That is an easy one... STUPID TECH. The 30 amp setting is when you are on a 40 amp service the invertor will limit the draw to 30 amps.

What if I'm hooked up to a standard household wall outlet (110vac/15- amps) and I want to heat up my coffee in the microwave without tripping a breaker? When selecting Inverter, will the household connection be disabled, as would happen if I selected Generator? What power selection do you recommend under this condition? With a 30-amp selection, my coffee only gets lukewarm.

Gwen, your inverter is also the battery charger. The setting the tech was referring to determines how much power the inverter will use to charge the batteries while you are connected to shore power. If you are on a 50amp campground breaker, it really provides 100amps total, 50 on each leg. A 30amp campground breaker only provides 30amps as it is only one leg. I suspect that 30amp is the largest setting on your inverter and it allows the charger to pull its maximum current for battery charging. This will charge your batteries the quickest. If you are plugged into a 30amp breaker in a campground, you may have to move the charging amp setting to something lower, like 15amp, especially if your batteries are low. Otherwise, if you try to run the microwave or air conditioner while the inverter is bulk charging, you'll probably blow the campground breaker. Does this help?

Yes, that cleared it up for me too. I never did understand what this setting was supposed to do, even after reading the inverter manual.

I really appreciate all of you helping out this "newbie"! Coming from a travel trailer, I'm having a little overwhelmed with all the gadgets and that 16" stack of manuals!
Anyway, from what I'm understanding, if I'm plugged into 50 amps and set the inverter to xxx amps, I'm still getting 50 amps into the coach but xxx of them will be allocated to charging the batteries if needed. So that leaves 50 minus xxx for everything else. Is this correct?

That feature is to limit the power consumed by the battery charger. I think that using it may not charge the battery effectively (there must be a reason it requires that much current at that phase in the recharge cycle). The best time to use it is when you are on 20 amps (or even 15 amps, although this low of a current source can damage your A/C).

As an aside, there are 100 amps available inside the coach. 50 amp hookups have 2 50 amp legs (out of phase).

Once the charger is float charging it draws much less than the xxx. There should be a setting on your inverter panel (Meter Mode) that lets you see how many AC amps the inverter is drawing. You can look at this from time to time to see what is what under different conditions.
Your air conditioners, washer/dryer, floor heat, etc are on the non-inverter panel. They share the 100amps with the inverter.
Exactly what is what is hard to determine without knowing the panel wiring. Hope I didn't just make things more confusing.
