Battery problems

I have an '05 Allure with the AGM batteries. Unfortunately, they have not been able to keep a charge. The service department says that sitting for weeks could be the problem, even if I use the kill switches. However, after having them plugged into 50 amp service for 4 days, driving home 250 miles, by the next day they were reading 8.9 amps.
Finally, it has been determined it was the batteries after all. Apparently the company says that they are having a lot of problems with Country Coaches and the AGM battery.

Has anyone else reported problems with their AGM batteries?

After taking delivery of my coach in May 2003, I began to notice some leakage around the caps of the AGMs. Although they seemed to hold the charge OK, the batteries were replaced under the battery warranty later that year. I believe in your case, a physical inspection and a load test would provide enough information to determine if they are defective. The Lifeline AGM batteries have an excellent warranty.

I posted here, at the end of another message, of having AGM battery troubs.

Mine are basially dead, after about 18 months. We never dry camp, so I didn't notice until we got home from FL, and left the unit unplugged for a short time.

I noticed in poking around the Silverleaf dash display, that both Prosine inverter/chargers were set to "flooded" and 100 amp max charge. The Prosine manual says set to AGM, and the incorrect setting could cook the batteries. There is no way that this can be changed by me, its a "installer" setting. In fact, I don't want to know ... that way I can't be accused of messing this up.

I believe this setting is another CC brain fart ... I have a call into our guy at LD and plan on asking.

Four Lifeline 8D's are abount $2,000, and mine are shot. I plan on messing around somemore with a clamp on amp meter, but I think it too late to do anything with this set of batteries.

We have had the AGMs for almost 3 years now. To date, there has been no problems with them. I have let the coach sit for a month with no shore power and the batteries were still at 90%. We have the RC7GS controller and I did set it to the AGM setting. Maybe we have been lucky.

You need to stop poking around on the Silver Leaf and find out how to check and adjust the settings. We have the same system and it works very well but you have to take hold of the computers and learn how they are set. I wish we had the same Brain Farts the factory has. We have 2 -3000 Watt inverters just like you but they lock up at times and shut down the chargers. Then you need to craw under the coach into the black hole and reboot them, not fun but that's life in the high teck coach business. Now I check to make sure the inverters are charging every day. I believe some of this is caused by heat or voltage but who knows. These coaches were never ment to be left alone for any amount of time.

Hi Chuck....

Just as a point of reference....depending on the charging system, the charger(s) may have to be programmed for AGM batteries. The charge rates for wet cell, AGM and sealed batteries are different.

Thanks for the input. When I wrote that, I made the assumption that the proper settings had been verified and that the batteries themselves could be faulty as they had been in my case.

I agree ... I just assumed things were programmed correctly from the factory. Maybe they are, but I don't think so.

I don't want to mess with anything, as this is all warranty stuff.
The Silverleaf docs are a joke ... they don't really tell you what is going on. I can handle some tech talk if I could get someone to speak it.

Once I get this resolved, I will press the Silverleaf folks to get me some good techie type info, then I will be responsible.
We have had to reset the inverters too, and learned how from someone here, this is a great board ...

I will post what I learn in case others are having the same problem.

I have AGM's also and they do not seem to hold a charge and they never have held a charge for any length of time. Mine will drop off in a period of a day or so.

Who did you get to check your batteries and replace them. I have had mine checked several times and they always tell me they are fine.

Kevin, I took mine back to my dealer here in Orange County (McMahon RV)complaining a second time. This time the dealer checked them (instead of the manufacturer or distributor) and oddly enough, a month after the distributor said they were OK, my dealer did their own load test and certified the batteries were bad. It suppose to be under warranty, but I hear the AGM guys are hard to work with. I will find out this week.
I asked my dealer to make sure that the inverter was set for these kind of batteries (thye need to be charged differently from typical 6 volt batteries) and that there was nothing causing a drain. He told me everything was OK. It just happens if you get one dead cell it will eventually take out all the rest.

Kevin I have found that the AGM (Lifelilne) to be very cooperative. Since you in Oragne county they are just over the hill in Industry i thilnk.
Anyway i have been there and they exchanged my batteries without issue. I have a 2003 Allure30895
