Refinishing Tabletops

Some of the tabletop surfaces are rough in our coach. I was considering refinishing (e.g., sanding and varnishing) them. Has any one done this? I was considering using something like �Minwax Wipe-On Poly� polyurethane finish. Has anyone used Wipe-On polyurethane finishes?

I did this with one of our previous RV's. Lightly sanded the table surface and used a clear polyurethane. Did several coats to protect the table in case something spilled or did not use a coaster. I used a glossy finish, put on with those cheap disposable foam brushes. Had a chance to see that coach last January, 3 years after we traded it in, and they looked as good as when I did it.

i just refinished my table tops. The old finish was pealing off and had become marred by "no scootum" type placemats we bought at Camping World.

I used acetone to remove the old finish. It worked like a charm and was very easy. Just be aware that acetone is extremely flamable - use in well ventilated area and DONOT smoke. Mythel Ethyle Keytone (MEK) will also work to remove the original finish. I believe the original finish on my table was lacquer. My table top is part veneer so I did not want to sand and once I got the old finish off, the wood was almost free of marks. I then refinished the table tops with three coats of spar urethane - it is rated for boats and outdoor applications in high light but is also safe for use indoors. I just did the work a couple of months ago so can't really report on wear, but after a little over a month of service, it is holding up well.
Refinished table looked as good if not better than new.

Before I did the work I consulted CC and they told me about the MEK/Actone. They recommended lacquer, but wanted me to spray it on not a task in which i am skilled. My local Sherwin Williams dealer said lacquer should not be used on dining tables and i was leaning to a polyurethane type solution anyway. I chose spar urethane thinking it might tolerate water and light better. Time will tell.

All in all it was an easy project and turned out well.
