David, thanks for the reply. I think you're right- the water heater thermostat is set too high and the safety valve opens.
We had this happen once before with the water heater running on propane only- caught it quickly and assumed the propane was heating the water so fast the valve opened. We also found re seating the pressure relief valve was not easy. In this current case, the propane was not on, just electric.

Does anyone know if our water heaters have a temperature control knob? I have looked outside and inside and can't find one .

If it is an Atwood, it uses fixed a thermostat, thermocouple and ECO. None of them adjustable.

About 5 years ago, I spoke with an Atwood Tech at a Rally. He gave me an adjustable thermostat for the water heater. It goes in place of the "preset" one and has an adjustment on the top. Decided the one that was in there was OK so did not install, gave it away last year. Friend got one at the same time, he said it worked fine.

Just discovered that I have a leak somewhere on my water heater. Water seems to be coming in between the tank and the styrofoam surrounding the tank. I have gotten about 2 coffee cups of water in a 24 hr period, so it is a very slow drip. Is replacing the tank my alternative, or could there be another problem that can be fixed.

Chances that the leak is coming from other sources is possible. However, based on what you wrote, tank leak is a strong suspect. I have replaced a few. Mine failed after about 8 yrs. The water heater is expensive for gas/electric w/electronic ignition but, fairly easy job to replace.
In my experience these tanks need to have calcium deposits removed once or twice per year depending on hardness of your water sources. Otherwise, deposits can accellerate deterioration with consequential pinhole failure.

There was a great article on water heater maintenance in a recent issue of FMCA magazine to read for details.
But, basically, here is what I do:

1.Turn off water heater controls.2. Allow water to cool or use it up by turning on hot water tap. 3.Turn off coach city water supply or pump. 4. Remove drain plug. 5. Open safety relief valve. 4. Allow tank to empty into a large bucket to catch some of the calcium chunks and particles 5. Attach high pressure water heater flushing wand* to hose and insert into drain plug opening. 6.Turn wand to direct water pressure to bottom and sides of tank while moving it in and out slowly (you will be amazed at the amount of junk that is released). 7. When water flow is clear, replace plug firmly but do not over tighten. 8. Turn on water pressure. When water exits from relief valve the tank is full. Close pressure release valve and inspect for any seepage at the drain plug. 9. Switch on water heater control. 10. Re-inspect for any seepage at the plug after water is heated.

*Water heater cleanout wand/flushing tool is a thin tapered plastic tube with a bend at the small tip. This bend helps to direct high pressure water for the cleaning/flushing action. This simple tool is available at Camping World or your favorite RV supply source for about $10 or so.

Thanks to all responders. I replaced my water heater a couple days ago. Not to bad of a job. Discovered a very small hole in the bottom of the tank. Guess I better keep this one cleaned out.
