recommendations for reliable bicycle racks

I am looking for a reliable way to carry two mountain bicycles. There are, of course, many options including the hitch mounts between the tow vehicle and coach, those that hang on the ladder in back (scary), those for the tow car, and others.

I would love to know to if anyone is using something at least moderately convenient that is reliable and fairly easy to find!

I went to the back of the toad. Had jeep and they sold a kit for bikes. worked great, bikes stay relatively clean and I could take the bike off road prior to use. Look at kits sold by you toad manufacture.

How about folding bikes carried in one of the storage bays? We've got one of those 'Camping World' ones we carry there, but it is by no means a mountain bike. However, this company

We have a wrangler toad and do alot of mountain biking as well. We found that having a hitch mounted bike rack on the wrangler works very well. We have a hitch lock on the bike rack and when we stop to camp we put extra locks on the bikes on the racks as well. We find it easy because when we don't want to use the bikes we remove the bikes from the toad and put it in the coach hitch. That way we always have the bikes locked up. Our full suspension bikes are pricey and that way we can sleep at nights. We had an older hitch from Sportrack (??) but we just bought a new Thule and like it so far. Yakima has one as well but we liked the Thule better. Both are available at most bike shops and sporting good stores so it makes replacement parts etc. easier to find.
Our friends use roof racks from Thue on their cars and love them. It wasn't an easy option for us since we have a soft top. The hitch mounted racks can also be used on any car with a 2" receiver. We did have to get a hitch extension to clear the spare tire.

You don't mention what type toad you have, but I have always carried my bikes inside my toad, a Honda Odyssey. I'm a very serious cyclists though, and my bikes are very, very pricy. I carry three bikes this way. They will fit in most SUV's with the back seats folded down. Before the Odyssey I had a Saturn Vue and hauled three bikes inside it. My son hauls his inside his Toyota 4-runner. I would never haul any of my bikes on the outside at any time, but there again, it has a lot to do with value, etc. You can buy a simple rack at a bike shop that the front fork fits into. Most bikes have quick release front wheels so that you just pop the front wheel off, attach the fork, and the bike is safe from the weather and hopefully from thieves. Good luck.

We tow a Honda Accord, alas, not as spacious as an Odyssey! In any case, inside the car in some fashion is a good idea. Thank you and the others on the forum for the thoughtful responses; I'll consider them all and hopefully, be safely carrying the bikes down the road soon!

Make sure you take a look at the Thule® 964 Revolver Four-Bike Hitch Rack that swings away from the back of the car if you have a hatch back style vehicle or Suv. I just bought one for my honda pilot from LL Bean. They had the best price and no tax or shipping.
