Transfer switch question

Yahoo Message Number: 2270
Over the long hot weekend I drycamped at Kansas Speedway. I was running the 7kw Power Tech generator with 2 a/c units running. It was close to 100 degrees. After about 2-3 hrs the generator shut down. I am not sure why it shut down as there was plenty of fuel. Also the a/c units appeared to be operating perfectly. All circuit breakers & fuses checked, but no problems. After about 45 minutes the genset restarted but it would not transfer to provide 110 voltage. Has anyone else had this problem? Any idea of why it shut down? I connected it to a friends generator & it transferred over to 110 power immediately.

I retested the system approx 20 times over an 18 hr period but nothing changed--the genset ran but no 110 voltage. I took it to Coachlight RV (Carthage Missouri) and it tansferred on the first genset startup--the only thing different was in the campground I had hooked up to 50 amp power prior to the test.
By the way the mechanic at Coachlight RV spent about 45 minutes going over my system and because he found nothing wrong there was no charge.
Now that's a good dealer!

Any help would be appreciated..........Steve Intrigue #10673

Based on your observations I would guess that the problem might be in the circuit breaker(s) on the genset. I discovered the hard way that the 7kw generator does not supply enough "juice" to run both AC's for extended periods of time. A symptom can be that the breakers get fried (or partially fried) and don't supply enough current to activate the transfer switch.

I had a shut-down at Big Bend NP in 100 degree temps.... (same gen in a '98 Intrigue) due to overheating. It did restart after a rest of some forgotten time frame so I can't help with that part.

Dick,

I was wondering if when the temperature gets that high if putting a box fan under the generator would help? It seems like it is a hard spot to get clean air to its radiator when the slide is out and no breeze. I'm hoping if I can keep the generator cool, it won't shut down and cause the transfer switch from becoming confused. I have no other explaination for how the transfer switch acted.

Thanks for any ideas...............Steve.......Intrigue #10673
