Slide out rubber

Hi All,

The bottom rubber on my front slideout is starting to rollover. About 12 inches rolls out further than the rest of the rubber when the slide opens. The slide still works ok but I'm concerned about this section slowly coming out further each time I open up the slide. (I can push it back in before I retract the slide). It appears that a 'metal spring' is broken and coming out of the rubber! Any ideas on what to do? Is it a major fix? Or can it be done without removing the slide?

Good news and bad news. Bad news is that your assessment is correct.
The little metal clips in the gasket rust and fall apart which allows the gasket to do whatever it wants to.

The good news is that you can replace the gasket with the same type and you do not need to remove the slide. CC has a "tool" that they use to seat the new gasket but I think one could be fashioned pretty easy and then the replacement could be done at home.

CC tried replacing my bottom gasket at the Amana, IA rally but they didn't bring their tool and the new gasket would not seat. Seeing as how it was raining pretty good at times, they installed some "O" gasket as a stop gap measure and so far it has been keeping the water at bay. We have been in some pretty good rains since and no leaks.

I guess another fix for you is to try and glue the portion of your rolling gasket in place and see what happens. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Hi Bruce, I experienced the same problem on my coach about a year and a half ago. I talked to CC techs about replacing the seal and they said it was do-able, so I ordered the replacement seal and after it arrived I attempted to install it. Getting the old rubber seal out was a breeze, but getting the new seal in was a bear. There was not enough space between the bottom of the slide and the top of the metal strip the rubber seal metal fingers slide down on. I again called CC tech and this time I was told "Oh you have to jack up the slide to get enough room". I purchased four house jacks from "Lowe's" and proceeded to jack up the slide about one inch. This gave me the needed room, but it takes a lot of downward pressure to get the seal to seat on the metal strip. In all it took me about five days to accomplish the task, but three were wasted before I knew I had to jack up the slide.

If your half way comfortable with doing manual labor it's a do-able project for the backyard mechanic, but be advised, your fingers will be sore for a week from working in such a confined space.

I replaced the gasket on my slide using only a wonder bar to push it on. The hardest part was pulling the trim off the inside to expose the gasket. ( which was not too hard.) Mine did not have the said type on the bottom, so I don't know if that part adds difficulty to the job.

Hi,

Just replace all gaskets on our slide. CC also tried an Amana and could not do the job. I went to Keystone in Pa to do the work. It took 7 hrs and cost $1100 to do all four. The Tech knew what he was doing.
He also put me on the Dry Siicone spray and suggested I use it every 3 months. Hope this helps. Don't put it off too long as water will get in and cause you more problems than replacing the gasket will.
