Hurricane Heater Fix

My Hurricane Heater started to flame out intermittently after running for awhile. Flame would go out and white smoke would emit. It would re-light in a few seconds and continue to operate. I would also get an occasional run-flame out fault light. Called Craig Garrison at Rixen's. He diagnosed it as a weak fuel pump and he sent out a new one under warranty which I installed and it cured the problem. My original warranty had been expired for over two years. This is a tribute to a company that shows concern for it's customers and is willing to stand behind their product beyond the call. Thanks, Craig and Rixen's!

Don't count on lots of help from Rixen every time. You were lucky. Our coach isn't 2 years old yet but because the Hurricane heater was manufactured 6 months before the coach was delivered, they wouldn't even cover a $39.95 ignitor which has broken off in the unit. I spent $50 to have the problem checked out (included cleaning) and when I called for the part I got the bad news which was confirmed by CCI. Its only $39.95 so I guess I'm lucky it wasn't something bigger.

Having completed the tasks Jim Rixen gave me ( move a bridge on the mother board and replace the air bleeder on the coolant line with a plug) I have now run the heater for both hot water and coach heat for two days and nights. It has not been cold enough here to put any pressure on the unit, but it does seem to be working fine and does not seem to be leaking coolant. In my discussion with Jim he admited the electric heater will not provide enough hot water for a long shower if the water coming to it is below about 60 degrees, but will handle dishwashing, handwashing, etc. I guess this is what we'll have to live with, but CC nor anyone else should advertize " continuous hot water " from this unit unless they spell out this requires use of deisel fuel even when connected to shore power. HydroHot mde by the AquaHot people also requires deisel. It's not a really big deal, but there's some expense involved with this unit we didn't have with a separate hot water heater.

I hasten to add I'm still well pleased with my 03 Allure.
