Low Bridges

Yahoo Message Number: 50332
I have recently had a few close calls with low bridges that could easily have resulted in a bad accident.
Does anyone know of a good GPS system or add on for my Garmin that would give a low bridge warning?
Something like a speed camera POI list could work, but I can't seem to find anything.

Many thanks.

Do you have the Rand McNally LARGE SCALE Motor Carriers' Road Atlas? I think this does list low clearance situations.

Garmin has a truck only GPS. Maybe they can provide the software maps that will do that for you.

Lee,

Same here, each state has a list of restricted roads. I contacted the XDOT for the state I travel. I also would love to have a GPS system that told about restricted heights but expect unless you use an expensive Trucker type, would not trust it.....
Another clue, don't travel any three digit highways unless you have checked it out with XDOT. I have learned my lesson there too. Oh, and why was I on that road, GPS routed me. Funny, the route # was 666, road to H.

Randy Mcnally has a Truckers atlas that provides every road/highway clearances. We bought on and it gave us all peace of mind.

I downloaded the lowclearances.com POI data base and loaded it into Garmin MapSource, per the procedures provided by lowclearances.com. However, none of the bridges display on MapSource. I have sent an email to lowclearances.com but haven't heard back from them yet. If anyone else has successfully downloaded the POI data base to MapSource could you plz pm me and let me know how you got that to work. We are going on a long trip to New England in September and I wanted to make sure that the routes that I had selected did not have any nasty surprises (like when I went to Crown Villa RV Resort in Bend, OR (an absolutely beautiful RV park)) a couple of years ago only to find a low bridge just a ½ mile from the park. Thanx in advance.

Well Harry, now I feel really bad I did not respond to the Low Bridges email earlier - see below for why. I hope the application itself is a good product and you get it to work. It is suspect that the only way to contact the company is through email.
On my Foretravel Yahoo group, many of us came to the conclusion that the guy's the whole email request for information and his follow up response was a new form of targeted spam. When he recommended the POI database to the Foretravel owners, I asked the guy for the all the forums where this application was recommended - he did not reply so I assume he just made that up (see his message below). One of our Foretravel owners belongs to many Yahoo groups and she said this guy was banned from several because of his tactic. Our Foretravel moderator put him on monitored status to make sure he does not repeat.
If that is all true, it is a shame that so many good people spent the time to give him great advice and then he apparently just blasted the same "buy this" message back to all the groups he asked for help.

Good luck.

OK, I just spoke with Garmin (it really is nice to speak with a support person in the US who will work with you to figure these things out!). The problem is that MapSource uses POI file format of GPX. The lowclearances.com data base is in csv format. Two options: 1) One can download the entire file into your Garmin DEVICE (e.g., a Nuvi 755) and the Garmin Nuvi will correctly display the POIs (low bridges). You can then import that data from your GPS device back into MapSource, which I did and that works, i.e., waypoints are displayed with a note that a low bridge is located here or 2) you can use a third-party file format converter which will convert the csv data base to gpx format and then load that directly into MapSource. I have not done that and don't know how well it works.
