Tivo

Our just purchased used 2008 Intrigue has a Tivo Series 2 DT Digital recorder. The previous owner had never used it and I am not familiar with how they operate. When I turned it on it said it had to be activated. When I called Tivo they said it could not be activated unless I had a hard line phone connection or an ethernet internet connection. Anyone familiar with the set up I would have in my coach and how to go about using this equipment.

I also have a 2008 intrique. I asked the tivo question to the electrical guys at country coach when I tried to make my tivo work and the answer was we don't know why we put one in either as the will not work unless you have a static phone line. If you travel they are worthless. I took it out and replace my regular direct tv reciever with a dvr and it works like a champ. I have three direct tv recievers but only one dvr. Up grading the recievers to hd is a waste of time as the antenna will not recieve a hd signal. Hope this helped.

Dave, we have a Tivo in our coach and yes it does require a land line phone connection to be activated. But once it is activated, it will periodically nag you to connect to a land line but it will still operate just fine. You don't have to have a satellite signal to activate the unit so you can take the Tivo to a friend's house, plug it into a phone line and connect it to the input of a TV and use your remote to go through the steps to activate. You can use this same procedure every few months to get rid of the nag messages and to allow the unit to get any updates that might be necessary. The other method that I have used is to leave the unit in the motorhome and I carry a 100-foot phone cord and run it into a campground office or business or friend's house or wherever else I can mooch a connection to a phone line. You'll get your first nag message after a month and then the time between nags increases until it is every day. You just delete the messages and carry on as normal. It has no effect on recording or playback. We love our Tivo.
By the way, I have tried using both Skype and Magic Jack as the phone line for Tivo to use to "phone home" but for some reason it won't make the connection through either of those VOIP phones and my Verizon air card Internet connection. That was a disappointment! I was hoping that might circumvent the issue. I just don't let the "nag" get to me. Today it nagged me that I hadn't connected in 107 days and I said "Thanks - Delete"!
