Hydro Hot Heater Craft heat exch. squirrel cage blower & motor unit

If you have Aqua Hot or Hydro Hot with Heater Craft squirrel cage blower & motor unit, I have an alternative solution for replacement. Heater Craft squirrel cage unit can be difficult to locate and costs $100-$166 plus shipping. The original motor has steel shaft on steel bushings, which fail. For $17 I went to a computer store, purchased an 80mmx80mmx36mm, 12 volt Tornado Vantec computer muffin fan that moves 58cfm of air. I mounted the fan to plexi-glass, matched mounting holes to Heater Craft heat exchanger. If it's too noisy, you could always insulate the box it's mounted in, being careful not to block the intake and outlet. See pictures in photo section.

While looking at my first big trip shake down list of 'opportunities', one item was the furnaces front fan making noises from time to time. This sounds to be up in the front passenger side. Searching the site for Heater Fan, I came on this post. Is the squirrel cage that sdlivingston48 is talking about, perhaps up in that area? Like the pictures he has posted.
If not, anything you all recommend I look into as far a the noise. Not constant, but comes and goes - enough that the DW comments about it:)! My first thought was a fan losing a bearing, so squirrel cage bushing could be fit to the sound.

I have replaced two of the three squirrel cage fans and motors on my HH system. One is the front one where your trouble is centered. It is easy to locate and purchase the fan and motor from Heater Craft.

The replacement is pretty straight forward though nothing is ever easy. Remove the cabinet in front of the passenger seat. Remove the dozen or so machine screws from the stainless steel heat exchanger. Remove the radiator like heat exchanger. Remove the cabinet itself and cut the wires to the blower. Replace the blower assembly and reverse the rest. This is really an inexpensive and DIY project.
I also bought and installed the three speed fan switch from HC when I replaced the bathroom/bedroom blower. I'll the other two eventually.
