HWH slide on 2000 Magna

We are having problems with our slide. It used to come in and go out without having the engine running. All I needed to do was turn on the ignition switch (but not start the engine) and press the "extend" / "withdraw" button to move the slide in or out. Whenever the extend/withdraw button was pressed you could hear the hydraulic pumps in the middle bay operate and the slideout would move smoothly.
Lately, the slide will still withdraw (i.e. come in) via the above process. However, extending does not work properly.
If the ignition switch is "on" and the "extend" button is pressed, I do not hear the hydraulic pumps. The slide will jerk outward, but it does not extend. If I press the button to withdraw the slide, I can hear the pumps and the slide comes inward and seals properly. (In other words, the outward jerk is reversed and the slide properly withdraws into the coach.)
If I start the engine and have the engine running, then the slideout has been extending in spite of the problems cited above. However, this morning, the slide would not extend even if the engine was running. (The "outward jerk" and "withdraw" operations still operate as above.)

Does anyone have an idea as to what is happening?

I had this probem for a couple of years and finally after I cleaned the electrical wire contacts on the back of the switch with a good electrical cleaner, the problem has been solved so far for the last year. You must clean both the wire connectors and the switch connectors. The slide will still move a bit without the pump because there is still some residual pressure build up from the last time the pump was on.
I did learn a temporary fix along the way that allowed me to operate the slide if the pump didn't work from the LR switch. I would have my wife operate the switch in the BR just to get the pump working, then I could hit the LR retract/extend switch and it would work. Just push in the BR (or any other slide switch) to the same postion as that slide's position. E.G. if the BR slide is out, hit the extend switch just to get the pump going so the LR slide will do what you want it to do. We haven't had to do this since we cleaned the connectors.

Skip, I don't know if this will help since I have one of the rare HWH front electric slides, but I had times when it would not work. I recently, on HWH's advice replaced the central relay for the slide system (also works the leveling system). I believe HWH said it is used on all CC's. Don't know if it used on hydraulic slide coaches. There were problems with these relays which were Chinese manufacture. On my coach it is in the electrical bay below driver. Cylindrical black thing with four terminals.

Great idea!!!... I took a close look at the circuitry and came to the conclusion that there might be a loose wire at the switch. I've not yet looked at it but I will soon.
According to the schematic, there is a jumper across two contacts on the switch and linked to the pump. The idea is that no matter which way the switch is pressed, power will be delivered to the pump. If that jumper is unreliable, then one side (retract) might be delivering power to the pump while the other side (extend) is not working.
Your suggestion for using another slide out control to activate the pump is a great idea!!!...(However, we only have one slide-out. Alas!)

PS... I'm thinking that the few times that I found the system to not work on battery but to work when the engine was going might have been due to the extra voltage available when the system was receiving alternator power (vice just battery)...just a guess, but I'll soon know when I check the contacts on the back of the switch...

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid in the pump? There is a little dip stick on the front of the pump, which is probably located in the bay below the driver seat. Low fluid would cause a problem with extending or retraction.

Just to close out the topic....

Thanks to everyone who provided advice and suggestions. The information was/is valuable for future reference. In my case, Larry Feather gets the gold star. He nailed the symptoms and problem.
The key piece of information was that the slide pump motor could be heard on the retract operation but not on the extend operation. He correctly diagnosed the problem as the jumper wire for the extend/retract dash switch that powers the pump relay. While one contact was working ok, the other was not...Hence the pump only operated for one operation.
All I had to do was jiggle a wire (disconnect/reconnect it to the switch) and all is well.

Glad you got it fixed Skip! Just note that disconnecting and reconnecting the connectors worked for me too, for a awhile. The final fix was the electrical spray cleaner. "Detox" I think it's called.

We have had a similiar issue with the LR Slide a few times. After talking to HWH is was either the common ground on the Slide Solonoid Valves or the switch on the dash. In both cases it was the switch on the dash. The switch can be purchased from HWH for a few dollars. It is a common switch which you may find locally. I would try to clean the Switch as a previous Coach owner suggested. I now carry a spare which is my insurance that the problem won't happen again.
