Adventures in my CC Intrigue

Well, my latest adventure with my 2000 CC intrigue consisted of spending 8 days at Desert West Coach service in Phoenix. Went in thinking I had a leaking coolant hose or loose clamp. Came out 8 days later with a much lighter wallet and a rebuilt radiator. Believe me you don't want to watch those guys removing all those hoses and fans and draining all those fluids. It's like watching your baby get it's first shots! The young fellow who removed the radiator did it in less than three hours but the two older guys who reinstalled it took about 8 hours. I will say that they were thorough while doing it at a snails pace. Also got a new Charge Air Cooler installed. Kevin at CC got one sent to me as a part of a non campaign by the vendor, "Radiator Specialists" of Sacramento California. I paid the freight and the labor and the vendor provided the CAC. Not a bad deal since Kevin told me those babies go for around $1500.00 The one bad deal was that the CAC was supposed to be shipped for around $70.00 but Desert West charged me $134 for shipping. I just checked with UPS ground and they are going to charge me around $65.00 to ship the core back to CC. So, it appears that Desert West Coach service marked the shipping up about 100%. So, if you go there be alert to charges.

My next adventure is a trip to Beaudry RV in Tucson for a recall campaign on some front end parts. Beaudry warranty/recall personnel are researching to be sure they have right parts or can get them in time to install them before I have to head out again.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced problems with radiators and Charge Air Coolers on their Country Coach. This seems like an awfully new coach to have a radiator go bad and start leaking.

Forgot to mention the reason for the 8 day stay was that the first CAC which was shipped by ground freight was damaged in shipment. CC parts department employee Doug Miguel came through like a champ and got the replacement unit shipped UPS red label. Shipped on Friday and arrived in Phoenix on Monday morning. A big attaboy for Doug!!! a

Too much time between our coaches to be related but my CAC (and quite a few others of this vintage) was found to be cracked and was replaced at one year.

I also find it surprising that your radiator needed replacement so early.
Did you buy your coach new or is the maintenance history known that might account for problems with the radiator?
Did you try to challenge the freight "pad" on the CAC? It's really poor for a service center to do that when they can screw us in so many ways that we can't catch.

What is this charge air cooler? I also had a problem with my radiator. It was not major, just flange gasket and soldering repair. The major expense was taking it out and putting it back in, at 8 hours each way. Did you have to have yours recored? Steve 2001 Intrugue #11294

Ray, Could you give me the details on the front end updates you are having done. I have spent endless hours getting my handling right. It is good now, but I have always suspected some minor design flaw.

Actually the front end has not been a problem for me, however, TRW sent out a campaign notice which states that some of the units have tie rod ends that must be replaced due to a possible defect which could cause them to break without warning. Not a good thing if you are driving down the road and suddenly lose your ability to steer the big beast. My coach handles great and I am reluctant to have the fix made but TRW tells me that it is necessary.

I am the original owner of the coach, I also found it strange to have a radiator develop a leak so soon. I was not able to verify that the radiator actually had a leak as the radiator shop had it torn down before they called me to come over in inspect it. I had wanted to be there when they dunked in in the tank to see where it was leaking but they failed to call me in time to do that. They did call me to show me where the CAC was leaking...but that didn't matter to me as CC had already told me they were shipping the new CAC.
An update on the shipping, Desert West Service manager had added $243 onto my bill for return shipment of the CAC core to CC, I told him there was no way I was going to pay that. He said well, if you want to you can ship it yourself. I chose to do just that. He helped me put it into one of the bays. When I arrived in Tucson I called UPS and gave them the weight and dimensions of the CAC, they told me it would be $45.80 to ship it and they would come to my RV site and pick it up.... So, now I am even more perplexed at Desert West's charges for this, $243.00 seems a bit excessive considering that I had just spent over $2000 for their other services. Either their person who checked on the shipping charges is totally incompetent or there was serious padding of the charges. It could be the former as their parts department manager was very difficult to deal with and I think she was the one making the shipping arrangements.

At any rate, I think that CC should seriously consider removing Desert West Coach Service in Phoenix from their recommended list of service centers unless they can correct this problem of over billing.
I might add that Desert West was also bad mouthing CC on warranty reimbursements or the lack thereof.

It was leaking so I told them to go ahead and recore it. That was the smallest of the charges, figured that I might as well go the whole route since like yours the major charges were for removing and reinstalling it. The fellow who took it out was able to do it in less than 3hours but the two guys who reinstalled it took about 10 man hours...they had to do a lot of learning about where things went.

After reading your experence at DESERT WEST COACH SERVICE in PHOENIX, I became angry thinking that could have been me or any of us owners......It appears you caught them with their hand trying to dip into your wallet AFTER you had already paid them $2,000 + for other services.
Their charges appear to be beyond "the cost of doing business"; ie,: $65 vs $134; then, $45.80 vs $243 for UPS fees.
A cynical mind might then question if, indeed, the radiator needed replacing on a 2 year old coach. I recently had a coolant leak "repaired" by tightening hose clamps.

Your experience with DWCS reflects negatively on CC's reputation for listing them ....they work hard on their after-sale service to their buyers.
Have you considered sending copies of your experience to both CC and DWCS ?
Since CC recommends them for servicing, I suspect CC would not be happy to learn they may be sending their coach owners to a shark den.
