Radiator expansion tank

My coach is losing approximately 1 - 1-1/2 gallons of anti-freeze per 1,000 mi. The only apparent seepage (leak)is around the sightglass fittings. Does anyone know how these are assembled or who the manufacture is? The hex heads at the top and bottom of the glass are quite tight and I hesitate to try to loosen them without knowing how the assembly is put together.

Roger, wow thats a lot of leakage to come out of the site glass fitting. I would think after the coolant leaked out below the site glass you wouldn't get a lot more.
Suggest you check the around the radiator, all inlet and outlet hose connections from underneath the coach.
I recently found a leak in the "weld seam" of this surge tank and had to have it removed welded and pressure tested prior to re-installing.
Your surge tank was likely manufactured by J.B. Specialties in Sacramento, Calif. Ph. 916 381-4790

That is a lot. However, the sight glass simply unscrews. You can seal with teflon tape. I was losing fair amount of coolant even after that, and I discovered that the while there was no visible residue, and it looked fine, the radiator cap, upon pressure testing was bad. Replaced it. 5k miles no loss!

i doubt you are losing 1-1.5 gal. out of the seepage. sound like over flow tank leak. i can top off the sight glass but when it is low (not showing in sight glass) i never have anything in the over flow tank. . also no drips under the coach. does this sound like your situation? bob 6028 ;02 Magna

Go to ebay and enter "cooling system pressure tester" lots of choices (19 items) of used testers to pressure the system. You can try it cold or install it then run engine until close to operating temp. With system hot and engine hot you will also probably need to crawl under the coach to look see. Open your drivers heating system.
You are not seeing any leaks as the anti freeze is hot and disappears/evaporates before it can leak to ground.
Careful not to over pressurize system to speed up your leak finding. Not necessary as it's leaking with normal operating pressure, probably 16 lbs.

Look at the bottem of the overflow tube. If there is any color there or below the tube outlet, the cap is probably bad. To prove a bad cap just fasten a white rag around the outlet and check for color of your coolent after driving a 100 miles or so.

Exactly the same. The stains around the site glass are, what I'd call, significant, so that's my theory on the leakage. A crack somewhere else certainly is a possibility, however.

You could try to "burp" your coolant system to see if that stops some overflow loss. Open the coolant system relief valve, turn on the dash heater, run the engine until only coolant runs from the relief valve. Instructions were in my manual.

It stopped my coolant loss after a shop changed the coolant.

I had this problem when my coach was new. It turned out that the sightglass itself was cracked. The cracks could not bee seen until it was disassembled. Ordered a new sight glass and it was fixed. It was ordered from CC, but maybe Specialty Logistics can help?
