Stair well slide cover

2004 Inspire stair well cover won't close, can hear motor when switch activated. How is the control area accessed? The cover does not seem to have a way to open it.

Had the same problem on an 07 Magna. All I can tell you is what I found. I extended the generator crawled under the MH and looked up in the space that the gen evacuated. On the pax side if you look up as far as you can you will see 4 3/8 bolt heads. These fasten the motor to the floor. Remove these and the step cover and motor assembly will slide out. sounds like bell crank stripped.

I don't know if the 2006 is like the 2004 Inspire. However, if it is: look at the vertical panel between the top step and the stair well cover. There will be (2 or 4 - I don't remember for sure and my coach is in storage right now) screws that hold the panel in place. Remove those screws and the panel will be loose. You will then be able to see the electric window motor and the linear gear drive. I used a spray lithium grease on the linear gear and mine began working. However, even if the gearing is 'bad', at least it is fairly easy to access (since you are able to work on it while sitting on the steps).

04 must be different than o6, there are no visible screws in the front step panels, no entry panel under the coach, can,t see above the generator, would have to drop it as it does not slide out.I know there is someone out there that has had the same problem. I'm almost ready to take a saw to the slide out front panel to access the motor

It sounds like the linkage has come disconnected. On my coach, the linkage can be accessed from a ~4'X2' panel which can be seen when lying under the front of the coach, in line with the step cover. This panel has about 8 or 10 bolts (7/16?) securing it. Once the panel is removed, you can access the linkage. The motor is on the driver's side in line with the linkage and can be accessed on my coach by removing the 1'X1' circuit breaker box located in the electrical bay under the driver's seat (outside). Without removing any wires, the CB box can be positioned for motor access if needed.

Know this is late, but wanted to post in case anyone else has step well cover problem. Ours wouldn't retract. Read on another forum post to get underneath the front of the coach and "bang" on the metal crossbeam on the driver's side near the electric panel. Worked! Probably a bad switch? Lonny & Diane

Kevin, Not visible. Hidden somewhere. We had a mechanic try to locate it but couldn't. I read something about removing the electric panel and a 2x15 plate?? It's working right now so we just won't use it until we can get to a place where someone is more experienced with Country Coaches. We're headed to TX in Feb.

In my coach the drive shaft for the stair well cover extends into the bay under the driver's seat. Probably the micro switch at the extreme left (driver's) end that tells the mechanism that the shaft is all the way in and stops the motor is stuck so that the motor doesn't "know" it's OK to go in again (in the other direction) and move the cover in. That's why giving it a good whack some times works - unsticks it. If the step cover is stuck in the extended position you can overpower it manually by simply pulling (if you are inside) or pushing ( if you are outside with the door open). The latter is easier. Sometimes getting it started is all that's necessary but it WILL malfunction again sometime. We just gave up on ours although if you're careful not to retract it all the way so the micro switch doesn't activate to stop the retraction it may work OK.

Sequence is: Cover retracts covering step well. Micro switch at end stops it when retracted all the way. Step extends OK to cover step well but cheap switch is stuck so when you try to retract it again the stuck switch is "telling" the motor electronics that it's already in all the way and not to go in (retract) any further. Jar the switch and now the motor "thinks" it's OK to retract again and you go through the whole cycle again.

I was having a problem with my cover retracting this summer. A couple of sprays of Silicone Lubricant on the slide track restored dependable performance.

Was having problem with Stair well Slide Cover or as some call it Sliding Step Cover not retracting. Dash and passenger rocker switches checked out okay. Turned to our Forum and thanks to Jim M's Post #67936 was able to find the problem. The Micro Switch was hung up. The Switch is located inside the electrical compartment below the driver's side. To get to it open the compartment and located in the overhead is a square tube that houses the mechanism that extends/retracts the Cover. Remove the screws at the end of the tube and pry out off the end cap. Located just inside is the micro switch. Using the dash switch extend the cover slightly, manipulate the micro switch, if free spray with good electrical lube or if frozen replace micro switch. In most cases it appears the manipulating/lube will work. Thanks Forum for solving another minor problem.

I replaced that same microswitch and it fixed it for about a year. When it wouldn't retract, i rapped that crossbeam with a hammer from inside the eleltrical bay under the driver's seat. It's happened 3 or 4 times in the last four years since then, and the hammer trick worked every time.

Boy, talking about timing....Just took out the coach for the first time since it was winterized. We are on our way and the DW says that the step cover is not working and her feet are just dangling in the air. So, I need to find out what the problem is and here comes the postings of my problem. This micro switch that is mentioned...Is it in the compartment below the driver where some of the fuses and other things are contained? Pete, You say it's at the end of a "SQUARE TUBE" will this be on the only square "Tube" or will it be a process of "nope it's not that one...maybe that one."? Since mine is closed and not moving forward to cover the steps, should manipulating the switch help or hurt my situation. Is there a wire number that might help id this switch? Thanks in advance...

A quick fix is to force-move the step cover in/out with your hand while holding the switch and mine starts working again.
