HDKAK Onan Gen Set

Yahoo Message Number: 61893

Just needed to use the gen set in the motorhome and, of course it won't run. Didn't try it when we were close to service, just came from the Louisville Good Sam convention. Any way, only tries a little to run. Flashes code 36, fuel or air system, mechanical damage. Any clues what to try? Tom R

Dear Tom,

Per the owners manual:

ENGINE STOPPED FAULT?CODE NO. 36

(Engine stopped without command by controller) Corrective Action:
1. Check fuel level. (Note: The genset fuel pickup is probably higher than the vehicle engine pickup.)
2. Prime the engine fuel system by holding the control switch down in its Stop position for at least 1 minute.
3. Check the engine air filter and remove any blockage (Page 17).
4. Check for mechanical damage.

I know on ours if we have 20 gal or less in the fuel tank the generator shuts off. You might want to try the priming step #2 just in case your fuel was low and caused an air pocket in the fuel line. One of the times we did this it took a long time trying the priming step to get the genset started.

How much fuel did you have? System is designed to cease fuel to genset if below ~1/4 tank.
Otherwise sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Have heard of old fuel line being porous and sucking air. That said our coach was built in 3/04 and genset and fuel lines are fine as of this week.

I had a hell of a time with mine, just found out that the pick-up hose going into the fuel tank was dry rotted. Had it replaced, works great.

Fuel hasn't been below 1/4 for a long time, and was nearly full when I was trying to run the generator. At the risk of sounding foolish, where did Onan hide the air filter? I have always felt concerned about operation of the generator, when trying to start with the manual controls, it wouldn't continue to run unless starting it from the Xantrax controller.

Tom,

User manual should show how to replace filter. If you don't have one it took a quick google search to find this http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/manuals/981-0161C.pdf Naturally there is no clear picture of WHERE the filter is, just how to take it apart. Did you open the access door where the fuel filter is? I seem to think it is in there as well.
FWIW changing the fuel filter is a tad messy. I wasted money on a non Onan filter - don't bother, it leaked.

The closest Onan repair station THINKS the air filter is on the end where the generator outputs are located. Thinks? I'm looking for it since I have no idea when it was last serviced.
I will hunt up something to check the fuel pickup in the tank. I did put some air pressure in the tankl and I didn't get any fuel to run from the disconnected hose. Air pressure in the disconnected hose did go into the tank, but pressure is different than suction.

Tom,

A quick way to verify that it might be the rotten fuel line sucking air. You or a mechanic can remove the fuel line at the generator, replace it with a short piece of fuel line and stick it in a jug full of diesel fuel. If it will start then the fuel line is sucking air. If not you have another problem.
I replaced my fuel supply line ago as it was sucking air. It is not difficult to do as there is good access in a 2004 Allure to the fuel tank. In the first bay there are three access panels held on with screws that once off you can reach any portion of the top of the tank with plenty of clearance over the tank.
It will be a beastly task if you try to install the new line in the same place as the old. I saw no need for that and used a much more accessible route back to the generator. Has work ever since.

I recently had code 36 on my 04 Allure. I changed out the gen fuel lines and that did not stop my shut-off without command problem. I then changed the fuel filter and the gen runs great now. I sawed the old filter open it was full of crud.

On my 10k Onan I had to remove the fill tube on drivers side front, its located inside the door that you remove for oil filter change and checking oil with dipstick. One tubes are out of way its not difficult to change air filter. Fuel filter I have not attempted yet as I have not found fuel shut off valve.

Tom,

Years ago I changed air filter from bottom of genset. Access is thru air vents on bottom. Front cover is not way to access filter.

HDKAJ is HDKAK programmed for 500 Watts less power output, no other difference.

05 Inspire 51321, HDKAJ Onan to be replaced by HDKAK next week.

Tom,

The air filter is on the bottom of the genset. Crawl under there, you cannot miss it.
