Awning spring sprung

Greetings

While trying to tighten a Girard awning spring (end of awning attached to slide was getting caught/crimped while retracting slide preventing full closure) the spring got away from me and lost all tension. Now I can't seem to engage the spring to retighten. Any suggestions? I really don't want to remove the whole awning unless necessary....which I would have done professionally, as I don't have 2 strong capable bodies to do it at home.
