What Now for DIrecTV Hi-Def fans?

I've been out of the loop for a while and just recently got around to replacing my TIVO 10-250 (Hi-Def DVR) with the DirecTV version. Guess what -- no Hi-def!
So I asked my in-motion satellite tech (at TracStar) how I could get Hi-Def on DirecTV's HD DVR. His answer: "As of last year you can no longer get HD TV with DirecTV. DirecTV moved the HD programming to satellite 99 and 103. There is currently no in-motion satellite antenna that can pick up 99 and 103. All you can receive is the standard definition programming on satellite 101."
Now, I find it hard to believe that among the 3 or 4 big time in-motion satellite manufacturers for RVs out there, no one is working on getting us guys with Hi-Def TVs back in the market. Certainly the folks at KVH or some other outfit are working on this. I hate the thought of completely changing out my TracStar SV 360, but I will if someone else comes up with a winning alternative.
A secondary question is what about Dish Network? If you have Dish Network and a Dish Network HD DVR, are you getting Hi-Def channels on your in-motion satellite system? Or are they treating you the same way DirecTV is treating its HD subscribers?

I'm hoping the Yahoo Group can help me get back up to speed here.

In order to be able to lock onto the new MPEG-4 HD Satellites 88 & 103 it would require a taller unit which is 2 foot tall which might not make it under some underpasses or bridges. There is one available for Yachts but it is expensive and you would probably have to have a special mount made for it to hang it off the back of your RV or it would be too high and would probably at some point be torn off of your roof by an underpass with too little clearance.

i spoke with Kingdome yesterday. they said no dome will work with directv hd. they said most of their new ones work with dishnetwork hd and i presume that applies to other manuf.

I am not sure what the advantage is of having in motion television but I had Direct TV HD installed in/on my coach last week at Oregon Motor Coach for about $4500 including a new DVR and amp, panel, and blue ray dvd player using a motosat 5 L&B antenna with gps locator. It gets all Direct TV HD plus the NFL ticket. It does not work in motion. I think you could play something recorded on the dvr into the bedroom tv while in motion but I haven't tried it.
This is one of those units you see with an oval dish on a collapsible stand and blue led lighting it at night. It is shorter than a tracstar when stowed and less height than the air conditioner cover.

You can't get any better than Motosat and there is nothing that will pick up the New MPEG-4 Satellites 99 & 103 for an RV while it is in Motion other than the Marine HD7 unit I described earlier.
You can definitely watch pre-recorded material with your Directv as the program is already recorded and doesn't need a fix on a satellite to get the video, or you can watch a DVD.
This is normally to accomodate children to keep them occupied while traveling.

The earlier posters are correct when they say that no dome (expect the great big one for boats) on the market today can receive the new KA band signals from DirecTV where the HD programming comes from. All domes use a KU band LNB (and only one) so there is no chance that the dome you currently have will ever (seriously, ever) be able to pick up the DirecTV HD programming. If someone comes out with something in the future you could completely replace your existing dome, but that will be the only choice. If you want the DirecTV HD service then you must use one of the open face antennas from Winegard or MotoSAT if you want an automatic dish or a tripod mounted manual system with the same type of antenna. My personal recommendation is that you install the Winegard but the choice is yours.
Now, if you want to continue to use an in-motion antenna or any other dome antenna then you CAN switch to Dish Network as all of their programming is broadcast on the KU band and fully compatible with your current dome. There are a couple of caveats here, however. If you want to use a DVR, I cannot recommend any dome for this purpose (expect DirecTV SD only) as all domes can only "see" one satellite at a time. With Dish Network your programming comes from 3 satellites at 110, 119 primarily and 129 or 61.5 for HD. Since the dome can't do 2 at the same time, if you want to watch one channel that is broadcast on 129 and another that is broadcast on 119, you have a problem!! You can overcome this problem somewhat by using only one input to the DVR. This eliminates the ability to watch one and record another, but it does solve the multiple satellite issue. OK, that sounds better, expect that not all domes will support a DVR in the first place so you would need to check with Trac-Star to see if this is even a option. Whew! Please remember that neither Dish Network nor DirecTV invented the dome. This is exclusively an RV option put together to provide options to the RVer that the satellite TV companies never have considered or are every likely to consider. These companies do what they do for their 30+ million subscribers who have an antenna built by and for Dish or Direct. When we choose to step outside the box, then we have to deal with how our antenna will work with their service. They certainly cannot be concerned about whether their service will work with our antenna.

Winegard makes the perfect solution, it is high def, 4 outputs, which means no boxes to distribute signal, about 1,600 price plus install, works only while parked, it is the be3st i have ever seen, got rid of my inmotion....
