towable car

Yahoo Message Number: 62900
We live in AZ, new to RVing, and want to take our first big trip. What is a good towable car other than Jeep that is simple to tow without making alterations? We want something "used" that is lightweight and not an SUV or truck. We of course would like it to be 4 wheel or all wheel drive and would prefer a car. Any suggestions or any for sale esp. in AZ around $6000? Please help, this seems to be so difficult and confusing.

You're going to get a lot of opinions on this question.
We tow a HHR. Great car. Easy to tow. Light. We got a great deal on an ex rental unit. Chevy ok it for towing and even have a section in the manual on flat towing.
The only thing we do is to pull a fuse when towing. Not critical but it helps with battery drain.

Look at the Chev. Malibu. We tow a 2005 Malbu Maxx. It gets up to 35 mpg, is rather light, and we find it comfortable. We use a Roadmaster towbar. RUSS WARREN '95 INTRIGUE 10070

Your budget is a little tight so I would forget about awd. We tow a Toyota Corolla with standard transmission. It is solid, gets 35mpg, weighs only 2,800lbs, tows easily and drives very well. When not being towed, it is my all-around-town utility vehicle. You might be able to find a used one within your budget. Nissan Sentras and Altimas, again with standard transmission, would also fit if you can find a clean one.

Good luck.

We towed a Ford Bronco 11 for 12 years with no problems and because of age and insurance value we bought a PT Cruiser with manual transmission and have been towing it for 6 years. Great little car and excellent mileage. Used PT's should be within your price range with no problem. Good luck in your search. Macke 2003 Magna #6277

During the past 15 years of various Country Coaches, I've towed: Jeep Grand Cherokee (3 total with one having a defective transfer case.) Saturn, GMC truck. Currently towing a Buick Enclave (Have had recent repairs to the drive train mechanism. No indication it was from towing.) Have found FMCA useful resource: http://www.fmca.com/motorhome/towing for their annual review of toads.
