Turn the key and nothing happens

Yahoo Message Number: 4702
Moved the coach about 20 ft. this morning to wash it. After getting done with the wash job, got back in the coach to move it back up the drive way to finish loading it. Turned the key on, waited for the "wait to start light" to go out and turned the key to start the engine and nothing happened. Tried to start several times and absolutely nothing happens. Called road service and am waiting for them. Just decided to post this problem to see if anyone has had this problem or maybe a solution.

Thanks.
Egon

Assuming you have gotten it started. If not, I have a suggestion that might help, even if it decided to start: I have a 99 Intrigue that went into the non-start mode while I was in Kansas City, about 8 months after I bought it. After a very long series of events, including my final desperation of jump-starting the thing direct from the battery to the starter selonoid, I gave up and told CC that they either fixed the damn thing or I would drive it to Junction City and straight through the service department, I had had it!
They flew a nice young man out to Utah. I have since forgotten his name, but he was from Australia and still had a strong accent. He was as sharp as anyone I have seen. He crawled under the coach and within 10 seconds, came out with a terminal end in his hand! The terminal was the ignition lead that attaches to the small post on the starter motor. It was crimped only strong enough to look like it was doing its job, but was intermittently working. He replaced the end and it has never had the problem again. This happened after I had the coach in a Freightliner shop for several days and they replaced all sorts of things, believing it was fixed.
To complete my trip from Kansas City, I had to put a screwdriver on one end of a jumper cable, then attach the other end to the positive lead on one of the batteries. With the key on, I touched the screwwdriver tip to the small post (ignition post) on the starter and it worked! The folks at CC told me that I would void the warranty if I did such a thing, but they forgot one little thing: I was stranded and the Freightliner shop that the coach had been towed into a day before could not figure out what to do and wanted me to get the thing out of their driveway. I did.
Sorry for the long explanation. The point is: Check all the terminal leads on the motor before spending a bunch of money on mechanics that don't know what to do. If they are alright, check the neutral lockout out relay in the Allison transmission box up under the Allison shift module. They are Bosch relays that are available at most parts stores. You could have an intermittent relay that doesn't allow the ignition switch to activate the starter.

Sorry for you Egon and hope you still are not stranded. I purchased my 2000 Allure last June and on our maiden voyage the same thing happened to us...This was in northern Ontario. Road service came to the rescue and the techs at CC were very helpful via cell phone. Battery cables from the wrecker to the starter solenoid did the trick. The same thing happened a week later and that time I banged the starter solenoid with a long screwdriver and that worked! It has been fine since...The starter solenoid is situated on top of the starter located at the rear of the engine. Good luck!

Called Roadside Service (or this time Driveway service) mechanic checked all connections and finnally tapped the starter with a wrench and the engine started. Took the unit to the Freigthliner shop and they checked with Cummins to see if the starter was covered under the warranty. Getting a new starter shipped in overnight and will be on the road by noon today.

BTW took the coach first to another shop (know the owner very well) and was told by them that the starter was not covered under warranty because Cummins ships their engines to coach builders without starters installed. This did not sound right to me. Then asked about cost and was given a range from $400 to $900. That's when I decided to go to the Freightliner shop. Starter will cost me $25 for overnight shipping.

Thanks for you replies. Also, the coach has been pretty much trouble free ecept for minor repairs to the engine-oil blow by, oil pressure sensor and now this. Love the coach, it is our second CC the first was an '87 gas unit.

Thanks again,
Egon

I just had this happen the other day.
Twice it would not engage when I turned the key, then on the third time, and each time since, it has engaged.
I talked to the serv mgr at Holland Motors, Mich, and he acted like he never heard of such a thing before. He said he would talk to CC, but has not gotten back to me, which is typical. We are to leave Monday for a trip, so I am a little concerned about getting stranded somewhere. I thought it may be the starter switch, since my Pioneer display does not power up on occasion, but guess not. Looks like I need to add jumpers to the growing list of emergency items I must pack for our trips.

It appears that Cummins had some bad batteries around that time. My 2000 did the same thing after I drove it from dealer I purchased it from and made my first stop at an RV park. Came out and the starter wouldn't turn over. Cummins field service came out and replaced the starter, has worked fine since.
