Automatic Engine Shutdown

Yahoo Message Number: 64615
While in the middle lane of the 405 in LA during rush hour our usually trusty CAT diesel shut itself off. Water temp was 190 degees, oil pressure 45 psi and engine high water temp and engine oil low pressure warning lights were off, but check engine and engine stop warning lights had been on for about 20 seconds.
Fortunately, traffic was moving very slowly and I was able to restart wiihout stopping traffic and continue another ten miles to an rv park without any warning lights or engine shutdown.
At the RV park a mobile mechanic determined that we had a faulty low coolant sensor and it probably caused the shutdown. He could not find a new sensor in the local area so I had him reprogram the ECM so that it would not shutdown the engine.
After four days and no parts in the local area, I called Tim at Specialty Logistics in Oregon (541-515-6651) and gave him the CC part #. He had several of the parts on the shelf and overnight mailed them to us. He did say the parts are hard to find and it took them several months to get them on the shelf.
Now that we have the new sensor thanks to Specialty Logistics, I am wondering if I should keep the ECM programed as is or change it back to the factory setting. I believe the options are:
1) warning lights/derate/shutdown (factory setting)
2) warning lights/derate
3) warning lights only. (current setting)

All comments would be appreciated.

Dennis, I'd evaluate each of your three (3) options below against the cost of a new Cat Engine.

Dennis,

On my Cummins the 'Check Engine' is only a warning and the 'Stop Engine' is a warning and derates.

Dennis, my 2 cents. I guess I am wondering why you would not take your coach to a CAT Service Center in the first place. Seems like your engine is within the 5 year warrant range. If so, you may have had the issue resolved under the CAT warranty at no cost, as well as gotten your questions answered by the most qualified Techs.
Seems like the safest strategy to me.

I wouldn't leave it bypassed -- a few weeks ago we had a radiator hose go and had an engine shutdown due to overtemp. The time between when I saw the warning on the Silverleaf and the actual shutdown had to be less than 1 minute...I pulled over and before I could even pull on the brake it shut down.

Dennis,

on our 93 Magna with the cummings, there is a floor switch to the left of the dimmer switch which overides the shutdown sequence.
also we get a voice announcement (annoying sometimes) that says "engine will shut down in 20 seconds",(which I've never actually heard )or " black water holding tank is approaching full" (which we hear alot). hope this helps.

We are having the same issue with our 06 Inspire C-9. The problem doesn't happen every day but knowing it could be just around the corner isn't very assuring. Must get fixed. Read this site for more info on what Cat does and doesn't know.
