Diesel Fuel Milage

We have a new 40 foot 2003 Intrigue with tag axle. As full time RVers, our coach weighs 37,500 pounds fully loaded. We tow a fully loaded SUV that weighs 4,500 pounds so our total combined weight is about 42,000 pounds. On the highway, we usually drive about 55 to 60 mph. We have been averaging about 7.7 miles per gallon for highway travel. A friend who drives an American Eagle non-tag coach tells me he is getting between 12 and 13 miles per gallon. I would expect that the tag axle would slightly reduce the fuel milage, but not that much.

What is your total weight, chassis type and average fuel milage?

I have a 2000 Allure that weights 32,000 lbs and tow a GMC pickup with my wife's medical scooter that weights 6040 lbs. I get 7 mpg, seldom more, often less. I found that 60 mph vs 70 mph on normal (non mountain) highways wasn't much different - .1 or .2 mpg.

Your friend with the Eagle must drive all down hill or just can't figure fuel mileage.

With the same coach you have, loaded at about 33,000lbs. and driving between 65 and 70mph towing a Jeep Grand Cherokee (about 4,000lbs), I get 7.4 to7.6mpg.I have the 370hp ISL Cummins.

We've got a bigger rig from Country. A 1998 40' Prevost (w/tag axle) wieghs in loaded aprox 45,500# full and we pull one of 2 vehicles weighing in from 6600-7500#. The Detroit series 60 (475hp) with Allison 6 speed A/T running 65mph, most of the time, will get anywhere from 6.5 to 7.1 mpg.

We have an Affinity with a GVWR 48500, fully loaded towing our L300 Saturn, 56200. We have a 505 Cat engine and we are averaging 7.3 mpg over 11789 miles.
We owned a Southwind, no slides, 8.2 mpg, our Magna average was 8.5 with a 330 Detroit. I agree that the Eagle must only go downhill! Your friend probably wants you to wish you had purchased an Eagle! Dale Affinity 6129

We have an intrigue '01 which weighs in at 30,000 gross. The gvw is 33k.
Our mileage was running in the 7s, and then I added 10 pounds of air all the way around to 95 in the rear and 85 in front. This is above what the Toyo tire weight/pressure graph says. Anyway, our mileage jumped to high 8s and mid 9s. We even got a 10.999 crossing Texas with a tail wind. I now suspect that tire pressure has as much to do with mileage as engine efficiency on a large heavy rig like this. I will admit that we feel the bumps a bit more, but I sure like getting 8s and 9s.

I am embarrassed to say that I average about 7 MPG with my '02 Intrigue SD, 370 engine, towing a Jeep Cherokee. I've seen as high as 8 but only once. I'm hoping for better after a few thousand more miles. Some say the it takes 40 or so to really break it in.

We have a 2002 40' Allure with tag and recently completed an 11000+ mile trip and our average was about 7 mpg.I thought that was low, but I guess we are running about average for the group. We drove at various speeds from 60-75mph with a Ford Bronco 11 in tow{3500+-}.

If the American Eagle gets 12mpg it must be a coach that has a pre-electronic engine. We have friends who get that kind of milage but their coach was built in 95 before the new Cat came out or in 97 before the new Cummings.
