Stop Engine Light on Dash

Yahoo Message Number: 66399
I took my 2000 Allure out camping last weekend. On my way home as I was driving through the mountains my "Stop Engine" light on the dash would flash on at times. The light seemed to come on during inclines, but if I eased off the throttle it would immediately go out. Another condition is that I was also pulling a 26' enclosed trailer, so there was some weight behind me. I've done this trip many times and haven't experienced this. The gauges showed everything seemed normal (oil pressure around 75 and temp under 200). RPMs were around 2000-2200 when the light came on. Coolant level also seemed fine in the reservoir too.
Any thoughts out there on what I should look at? I'm sure if I take it to a service center with this sort of description they'll charge me a lot without much result because the problem only appeared during the mountain/incline portion of the drive.

Thanks
Steve

Rookie with CC, so factor this input:)!

-Silver Leaf? If yes, scan for diagnostic codes.
-How about the air filter. Could the higher RPM climbing a hill draw more air, and with a partial blocked filter not be getting enough air? -And the nasty one, intermittent ground or loose wire? But, this should not be only climbing hills...

Best of luck, and please let us know what you find as root cause.

thanks for the input. No silverleaf on my rig, and I thought about the air filter. I will check.

Hi Steve, I had a problem simular a few years ago. Check your oil level, if it's over filled then you may be getting diesel fuel into the crankcase, which thins the oil. On my coach they had to replace the fuel injection pump.

Earl,

Was it the injection pump or the lift/transfer pump? Huge difference in cost. Usually it is the seals on the fuel lift pump that start linking. Only reason to ask is the huge difference in cost. Fuel lift pump is a maintenance type thing.

Not to high jack your post but under the same conditions I get a brake warning icon come on - but only when the outside temp exceeds 90 ? Mechanics could not duplicate (as expected) and all applicable sensors checked out fine.

Steve:

As stated by another it may be the lift pump. WE who have an engine readout showing more data than the standard dash gauges, have the advantage of being able to see a reason for the yellow dash light.
That said, if it is the lift pump, I suggest you crawl under the coach and see if there is a wetnes around the starter. If so, it more than likely is the lift pump dripping on the starter.
The problem is , it may fail altogether when you least expect it. The first running symptom is engine sluggishnes. The other is fuel dripping on the ground near the starter.
Nominal replacement cost by Cummins is about $500.00. All that for about $15.00 worth of gaskets. They don't generally want to rebuild just replace. I carry a spare.
Good luck but don't plan any long trips until it is cured.

My ISC did that on my former Allure. The first time it was a bad sensor on the injection pump, the second time, it was the injection pump itself. Check and see if you have a minor fuel leak around the pump, if you do, get the unit in the shop right away before you find yourself stranded like I did, or an engine compartment fire. Hi Leonard, Wish it was just the lift pump. Injection pump and it was about $4,000.00. The engine was out of warranty by about 1 month. After a few nasty letters to Cummins, they finally agreed to pay for it.

Glad Cummins stepped up. Injection pumps are usually bullet proof. Really strange for one to fail. $4000 is no small repair. In rebuilding pumps, it was mostly age/hours, some water in the fuel issues, but mostly they were rebuilt when the engine was rebuilt.

I lost my injection pump, and it was the same thing: The crankcase filling with diesel. The Cummins guy said it is a pretty common failure on engines with a lot of miles (mine had 80K at the time). $4K.

I was lucky, Cummins in Farmington just had to replace the accumalator section of the pump with the two ceramic pistons, $1100, which the extended service contract paid for.

Same problem on my 99 Allure just after I bought it three years ago. Changed out both fuel filters and problem went away, Was going to take to Cummins and have the laptop put on it. Ken 99 Allure 30356 in Yuma Az.
