Allure 36'

I have a two month old 36' Allure so my problems may have been discussed already. I'll just list a few of the most important. First, if anyone out there has a Hurricane CO45 and has not received a recall notice, you need to discontinue use and have it checked. We had one that actually burned when it was two weeks old---with the coach sitting next to our house!! The only thing that kept it from burning the coach was that the pump wires shorted out and shut it down. Otherwise we would have lost the coach and probably the house.
The most disturbing aspect is that we never have received a recall notice. CC certainly knew who had the faulty units as we have met others with units several months older than ours who had received a notice. And if you are facing a replacement procedure, contact us and we will give you the rest of the gory details and some suggestions.
After several additional repairs on our own, we are still having trouble with the electric side of the system. The book says the electric elements should provide "all or part" of the heating needs. 4000 watts of electric power does almost nothing. Since the system is poorly designed in that it has no hot water holding tank, every time the hot water is opened, even for a cup, the diesel has to fire. This includes when on shore power. I am familiar with these systems on boats and this one is not right!
Jim Rixens, the US distributor [ex distributor now] says electricity should heat the entire coach. ITR [hurricane] says it won't. 4000 watts is a lot of power for a 1/2 gallon heat exchange tank. A 52 gal home water heater only operates 4500 watts at one time. Even without a holding tank, electricity should do just what the book says, provide all or part of heating and domestic needs. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Due to the length of this, I will just list a FEW of the other problems hoping someone can tell us how to solve them.
1. Dash air blows only hot air. Dealer couldn't, or wouldn't, fix it.
2. Air unloader [spitter] goes off every ~30 seconds when driving, ~every minute at idle. CC says it is normal. Cummins says not.
3. Front end wanders, especially in wind or on rutted or broken surfaces.

For item 3 below, make sure the ride height for te coach is correct. You can measure this yourself using the specs in the owner's manual.

Hi Doug,

I have the same problem with the Air Dryer going off every 30 seconds.
I'm in the trucking business and know it's not right. I had a chance to visit the factory just this week and discussed the problem with service (I was in the area on business and did not have the Coach with me). They said it was normal and that just is not correct. If the dryer is unloading every 30 seconds, that means the compressor is engaging every time. Wonder how long our compressors will last? I have adjusted the governor and that didn't help. I previously had a Foretravel with the same setup and the dryer popped off each time the compressor brought the air supply back up to 120 psi and that only happened occasionally while driving, as the air throttle and suspension eventully depleted air from the tank. Thats the way our trucks work also. I am going to talk to Bendix and see if they can shed any light. I will keep you updated on my progress. We can't be the only ones with this problem.....

You can tell if y0ur Hurricane is subject to the recall, whuch covers the control board, by removing the cover and looking at the white label. If it says yours is a model 1002 you should contact Herb Hughes at CC service immediately.

Hi Folks,

About 2 months ago I reported a reducer in the right reservoir that split. This caused an air loss.

The CC leakdown rate is greater than 8 (I think this is the correct number) psi per hour, federal rate is 3 psi per hour. A quick check is after the system pressurizes to about 125 psi and the pop-off occurs, turn off the engine and with the left window open, pump the air brake pedal(press and hold pedal for 3 seconds) and listen for a hiss from the rear (distinctive from the air hiss from applying the air brakes), that is when the governor would kick in and that pressure for my coach is about 103 psi as indicated on the dash air pressure gauge. Note the gauge has two needles - one for each reservoir tank.

It appears there is a leak somewhere and soap and water in a spray container on all connections is a start. Get your foldout diagram of the plumbing for the air system - there are many connections.

Doug, we have the same system, and have had the board update.
The elec elements seem to do a rather good job on our system.
We use it that way quite often, as we keep the coach in a building in a town about 150 miles from home. We will sometimes stay in the coach, in the bldg.

You can shower with the output from the elec, although it is not nearly as hot as with the diesel burner, of course. We also run the heater with just the elec output, to take the chill out of the coach when we first get there.

Of course, on the many occasions where the diesel quit working before the fix, we had only the elec elements to heat the coach.
