Cranky step cover extension system

Bob: Here is my story on the step cover problem: My cover works when it wants, mostly don't want! After three frustrating years including sending the entire unit to the manufacturer for repair, I rewired the thing myself. First off, the rewiring will insure the thing will work, but it has no (repeat, no) fail-safe stops at either end of travel.
My problem has been the stop switches at either end of the travel of the cover. When they hang up, It won't work. I replaced the motor twice, once under warranty and once on my own, to the tune of $250.00. I suspect the motor was alright both times, but who knows now?
I have posted a wiring diagram on this site for your use if you want. If it doesn't come through, send me your E-mail and I will send it to you.
In order to get the thing to work, I went underneath to the motor where I eliminated the stop switch wires that come from each end of the actuator. I then wired the motor direct so that one side of the switch opens the current one way and the other side of the switch opens the current the opposite way. It is a simple double-throw double-pole switch. The motor will reverse when the hot lead is changed from one side to the other, via the switch.
Once again, this system has no stops on either end, so I have to be careful to not go too far. I'm not sure what will happen, but I know it wouldn't be good.
I decided that a cover that always works with no stops is better than a cover that never works!
