Rt 395 in California

We are in Lake Havasu City AZ and would like an alternative route home to NW Washington besides I-5. Has anyone taken 395 from "4 corners" near Barstow, up through Reno, all the way up toward Bend, OR. Any other recomendations? Thanks.

I have not driven the 395 route during the winter. I would check the weather especially near Reno.

I have taken that route several times and I really enjoy it. I would, be sure to check for road conditions just north of Mono Lake and then again around Reno if the weather is bad.

395 is what we always take north. The hiway is in good condition and divided in some parts. The "5" is in terrible condition due to lack of maintenance. In the summer we take 395 north past Reno and then cut over to 5 through Susanville. You will come out at Shasta. However, be aware that the 395 goes through high elevations above Bishop and hits 8000 ft at a couple points. This means you would need to be aware of any snow warnings this time of year. As a main Hiway it would be kept clear if possible. The 395 is a great scenic trip especially when compared to the boring and bumpy 5. You could always cut over to the 5 at Reno taking the 80. You can also take the 395 into Oregon and then cut over to Bend or go straight. However, this is all winter snow country and you will need to pay attention to the weather forecasts.

We have used 395 from the NW to Reno several times. It is really a much easier drive than I-5. I agree with the others it is the best way north and south. If you get to near the Oregon border the is a great RV park about a mile off 395 at Likely, CA. Not fancy, however, they have 50 amp, sewer, and water. Use to be $20.00 a night and there was a small restaurant with 18 hole golf course.
We stay each time we go through. It has been over 2 years since we have been traveling the mid-west and eat coast.
The name is Likely Place RV & Golf Resort. You can check their web site and I think they are in Woodal'ls.

Another option this time of year would be to leave Havasu and go to Las Vegas. From there you could take 95 to the Reno area and 395 from Reno to Bend. We do 395 out of Reno to the Oregon area several times a year, but we do not go as far as Bend. We did go that route to Bend about 6 years ago and did not have any difficulties. The area in the Sun City, Oregon area is interesting scenery and there is a lot of lava rock around the road.
