My 99 Allure has the kitchen slide with a Zip-Dee awning. The spring has broken and I would like to know if anyone has replaced one. Will call Zip-Dee today and ask for procedure to replace it.

Zip-Dee awnings are easy to work on, but can be dangerous. Had two techs work on my main awning at Redmond last year. Took them about an hour and they charged only $30! My problem was solved by removing, cleaning and lubing the spring and pivots. After 15 years of use it now works like new. RUSS WARREN '95 INTRIGUE 10070

I replaced the main awning spring on my previous coach ('99 U320 Foretravel) about 18 mos. ago. The awning would not roll back up without manually winding it... not fun for a 25' awning. When I removed the spring coil, I found that the center rod was a 2

When my coach was two years old, I had had 3 arms replaced, 6 straps, three plastic hold down clamps, and the fabric was starting to fail and was tired of leaves collecting in the roller tubes. So I talked to Doug Rutherford and he called Carefree and they offered to replace the awnings, with the new style with the fold up frame that made a tint. I declined but he did a swap a roonie for me so that I had two new DS awnings from Zip Dee. And because the PS awning from Dometic was just a topper awning and caused water to leak into the coach it was replaced with a combo topper window awning from Zip Dee. I haven't had any problems since. I went to Zip Dee in Chicago last fall and had the failed Dometic door awning replaced and another window awning installed over the drivers access window. The fabric company is only a few blocks away so it was easy to match fabrics. They even replaced the fabric on 2 chairs that we purchased with our 84 Airstream TT. They re-tensioned all the awnings and installed new straps on the 5 year old window awnings for me. They replaced hardware where ever I needed it, and gave me extra cotter keys, cap nuts washers etc. They also checked all the fasteners and used lock- tite to secure any loose nuts and bolts. It was a great experience. The Polish Gal who is the master seamstress is a wonder to behold. And they will explain to you why they stitch the fabric and assemble the awnings the way they do to prevent premature ware Carefree and Dometic awnings seem to exhibit.

Bill,

I replaced my galley Zip Dee last fall due to a broken spring and it's not that big of deal. You have to drill out the 3 cap rivets on the spring end, pull out the broken spring and parts, slide the new spring assembly back in and re-do the rivets. You have to be careful when rewinding the new spring in not exceeding the proper number of turns. I think my new spring was around 134.00 with Zip Dee.

I also had to do the same thing to my 04 Allure years ago, so I had a little previous practice.

Bill,

I have never drank 'Carefree beer' before but maybe you do need to drink something else (zip Dee ?) that does not unwind you faster than spring coil takes to wind.
I bent the arms on two of my slide awnings winding them out when wet and frozen. (awning would not roll out while slide was moving out. Not sure what I was drinking at the time but I won't do that again (drinking and sliding).
I kept a close eye on my fingers while I was replacing the old arms and keeping the wound spring from letting loose.

I know not something new. We just returned (11:00 PM) to our coach which is in OK City after being gone from it for two weeks. Everything in the coach is working great, but the refrigerator must have had a problem today as the temp is 62 degrees and the things in the freezer are still a little cold but certainly not frozen. Does anyone have any suggestions for things we can check or do? Ours was replaced 2 years ago when it wasn't working very well, and we have had the current fix done at Lee's RV in OK City in mid February. It is hot here in OK City up to 90 degrees today. Thank you for any suggestions and help.

Mary,

I just had to have the "Lamp/Thermmister wire assembly 620871 replaced. This is the wire from the interior light and connects to one of the cooling fins. My freezer worked but would not cool the refrigerator.

Dallas,

I am only allowed to drink "Texas Champagne", known by most people as Dr. Pepper. That must have been quite a job in freezing weather. It is 36 degrees here, so will have a few drinks and wait for it to warm up a bit.

I've replaced mine several times. Not technically difficult but does require drilling out some pop rivets and definitely requires two people. Call if you like. ZipDee has excellent directions that are easy to follow and the kit comes with everything you'll need.

Thanks to all who responded to my slide out spring issue. Turns out that one of the coils near the in inside the tube weakened and pushed the keeper out of its slot and allowed it to free wheel. New one on order, will cost $130 plus shipping. After being on the road for 12 and half years and 160,000 miles, guess I have to expect small happenings. Again, thanks.
