Cummins ISC 350 Maintenance

Yahoo Message Number: 5160
What is the recommended maintenance intervals for engine and transmission? I currently only drive 5,000 per year. Of course I want to keep the coach in good condition, AND I want to make sure I am not denied on any extended warranty/service contract.
From people I have talked with, it appears that many people miss the inital filter change on the transmission at 5,000 miles. I had it changed :-).

But it has been a year since my last engine oil change, am taking it in tomorrow, and was reviewing the "manuals" and notice that an oil change is every 15,000 miles or **6 MONTHS**. Includes Fuel AND coolant filter.

Transmission is every 25,000 miles or **12 MONTHS**.
I seem to recall some exceptions for RV's, but can't find it. Oops, looked again, and see that RV's can go 12 months (page 2-8, table 4).

Onan Quiet Diesel Generator is 50 hours, and then every 150 hours thereafter. Don't see a time reference. Probably take me 3 years to get the next 150 hours. Should there be a time limit on the generator?

I predict this will be an interesting discussion.....

Does someone have a good summary maint schedule? Those of you will SilverLeafs, do you enter your maint schedule in it?

Herb,

I'll try to answer your questions about maintenance.
1. Change your oil once a year or every 15,000k. Age on oil is as bad as milage.

change all filters at the same time. If you have an oil reserve use that as part of

your next change, never leave that oil in the reserve for more then a year.

2. Change transmission oil and filters every year or 25,000. The concern is for what

grows in the oil not the age. We have gone to extended life oil and Gold filters. You

need to do this twice before it is fully efective. See Allison dealer for fluid change

schedule for extended life fluid.
3. You should use you generator more then 50 hours in 3 years. Standing idle is the

worst thing a generator can do. Most commercial generators have an exersize

program which runs them once a week. We don't so when you are on the road

run the gen peroidicly with a load for an hour. Put both ACs on. Change the oil.
once a year.
4. We enter all our maintenance into the Silver Leaf. that's what we have it for

among other things.
5. If you only drive 5000k a year, then you are not moving the coach very
often.

We store our coach for as much as 3 months at a time so every 45 days we

take the coach out for a one hour drive. This keeps everything lubed and
moving.

hope all this helps, Bill G. 2001 Magna #5998

I am follwoing the recommendations in the book. I was changing it every 3,000 miles and the service writers at Cummins in Coburg, Ore (A "Coach Care" facilty near the plant and just accross the street from Monaco) told me to stop. They have never mentioned anything but mileage to me, but I plan to change in once a year. I pesonally think that changing the trans fluid once a year is excessive. You might want to call Coburg. I have found that my fuel filters have lasted much longer since I have been using Chevron fuel exclusively (had a bad experience at a Texaco). Some of my friends give me a bad time, but I swear that my rig runs better on Chevron fuel. I think it has higher octane.

I also use an additive that boost octane and mixes water into the fuel every time I fill it up. It is in a white bottle with red and black labeling a Walmart (cannot remember the name - but I can get it if you like). It is designed for winter use to avoid freezing the fuel. I was guided to it by a Cummins shop in Denver when the 5.9 I had in my Discovery stopped because the fuel filter clogged. The fuel in the bowl (on my CC) is always clean now. I change them when I change the oil. I lubricates the whole fuel system and belnds any contaminates into the fuel so they get ignited.
One area on maintenance on the CC chassis that is often overlooked is lubrication. Suggested to be done evey 3,000! I have been doing so. I bought my rig a year old with 19,000 miles on it and it had NEVER been lubed. The grease seals had never been popped by adding grease.
It took a bunch.

Incidentally, I never fill the oil above 2 quarts low on the dipstick (I have a 350 with an oil reservior) and the amount of oil it uses goes down dramatically. I usually add two quarts when it shows 4 quarts low.

With repect to the genset, I used mine very little at first, but came to understand that it will proably outlast me!!! I know routinely use it to run the house AC (over the road) on hot days. Once my rig gets hot, the heat pumps will only bring the temp down 10-12 degrees. If we dry camp, I run it in the am while cooking and running appliances, then usually run it while we are out during the day so we have a cool coach with charged up batteries when we get back. I continue to use it to run the AC until it cools off. Mine is a Kubota with an fancy name, I think it is an engine out of a small tractor.
