Need Help

We are currently just outside of El Paso Texas with a problem. Our inverter Xetrax Model 458 we think turned to toast. Black Soot on the top of the inverter, plus an over whelming electrical burn smell. We have no electricity from the inverter. We contracted my electrical Mechanic in San Diego. He talked me thru disconnecting the inverter so that when we are plugged in to 110 we would have power in the coach. We do have power. I turn on the generator and we can get the Micro , and the plugs to work, but the Air conditioning does not work. I do not know if it will work when we are p[lugged into 110. I have checked the breakers for the Air Cond. and the one fuse and everything is ok. Any ideas ?
Does anyone have any suggestions of a location that could validate if the Inverter is fried, and replace the inverter if needed ? Any suggestions involving any of these issues would be greatly appreciated ? It is very hot outside.

Lyle weatherholt can answer better than I as he lives in Las Cruces; but there is a Cummins service

center east of El Paso, near the Flying J at the Horizon exit that is a full service center. He has family members in the service business in Las Cruces but can't recall where they work. There's a shop between

exit 140 and 142 that services Motor homes that a friend of mine uses in Cruces.

Does your thermostat display show up, or is it blank. You may have lost your 12 vdc, check your fuses.

If your batteries or to low then there will be no control voltage to operate the thermostats. etc etc.. Just a thought. What happens if you fire up your engine as well as the genset, so you have 12 vdc as well as
110 vac?

I know the sales manager at the Campening World between Las Cruces and El Paso real well.

His Family ran the Countries Number 1 Airstream center for Many years in El Paso and he ran the service

department There. Mike Shenk is now the Sales/ facilities Manager, but if you tell him I sent you I

know he will try to help you with your problems. He sold me my First 34' Aitstream and my 98 Allure.

He took care of my Airstream for 11 years and the Allure for 2 years, when he changed companies and

dedicated himself to sales and then management. Thomas W. Insall 2004 Intrigue 11731

If you have to replace your inverter look into the Magnum inverter. You can also upgrade to a pure sine wave inverter for not a lot more money.

Dan,

Thank You for all the information regarding our inverter problem. Unfortunately I opened your email after we have already gone beyond those communities you have suggested we go for support.. If you have any suggestions in San Antonio, we will be there in about two days. It would seem that this city would be large enough to have RV support. I just hope to find one that is trust worthy. It is amazing how much you depend on Air Conditioning. You only appreciate it when it is non functioning. How did those pioneers do it in a wagon, I guess I should not complain.

Stan, I highly recommend Texas Custom Coach - Pipe Creek, TX. Call Mr. Dave Miller - Owner @ 830-510-4224 @ 10498 South Highway 16.
Pipe Creek is South West of San Antonio, Texas Custom Coach has Electrical for you to stay there, or you can stay down in Bandera, TX about 10 miles away from their facility.

He can fix you up.

Stan, there seems to be something weird about what you are reporting: On my Magna at least, the air conditioner is not wired through the inverter and should not be affected by your inverter burning up. The microwave is wired through the inverter and should not work if the inverter internal transfer switch or inverter A/C side/wiring burned up. Seems as if something else is also wrong. Check your transfer switch and your surge protector. You can order a new inverter directly from Xantrex or off of the web. Call Xantrex and they can provide you with the name a qualified tech to install in your area.

Stan, your inverter should have nothing to do with the roof A/Cs. If all your outlets, your entertainment systems and microwave work the inverter charger sounds okay as a circuit pass through device.
I assume that when you checked your A/C circuit breakers that you turned them off and then reset them rather than just trying a reset? Does everything but A/C work with generator? With shore power?
The problem almost has to be in the way you have routed power around the inverter.

Good luck
