DirecTV service

Yahoo Message Number: 71755
My wife and I travel mostly in the hot summer months as we live in Florida and like to get out of the hot humid weather. We usually leave here in late April or early May and stay out until mid September or early October. This year due to some health issues we had to return after being out on the road for only a month. We had our DirecTV service suspended from last 9/18/2010 to 3/11/2011(they will only allow you 6 months at one time)and again 3/12/2011 to 4/11/2011. It turned out that I needed knee surgery so I was able to get DirecTV to supend my service one more time which was against their rules but they said they would do since I mentioned that I might have to switch to Dish Network because they would suspend service as many times as I needed. Now DirecTV had to have a turn-on date which I gave them 6/17 (next Friday) but I am still not able to travel for another month. I asked DirecTV to continue my suspension of service for another month and they have turned me down.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do short of completely discontinuing their service. It looks like my only choice is to switch to the Dish Network. We live in a condo and can only have cable here.

Thanks.

Have had the same problem. Direct would only give me 3 months suspension at a time and then only a total of 6 months in any given 12 month period. In January of this year when Direct started up the service again, they immediately shut me off until I filled out all of the Mobil paper work, which took another two weeks to get the service started up again. The paper work was an exact duplicate of the original applications that I submitted to get the service originally started. I asked them the other day when I recently suspended the service if I was going to be required to resubmit the papers in 3 months and their answer was---"Probably"--- What a mess. However, Dish was no better as I had their service in several other rigs and had just as much trouble in different ways, but never the less still had much problems. I am convinced that Satellite TV companies just don't want to be bothered with RV accounts. Neither one of the companies seem to want to satisfy the RV customer. They are scared to death of the FCC......

I would just go ahead and have your service enabled as you will just be having one month where you won't use it.

How much does your Monthly Service costs?

Why not just reduce your monthly service to DirectTV minimums and pay the bill until you are back on your feet. Sounds like they accomodated your special needs when you first asked and now you are pushing for extensions. Maybe it is just time to take ownership.

Richard Skinner, Thanks for your input. Yes this is one way to get around this situation but I have similar problems at home when we leave with Comcast Cable. They don't have a vacation plan to help lower cost. I can lower my service down to the minimum and still have to pay over $100 to keep from completely canceling all of my serice. If I do cancel my service, I have to take all of my cable equipmnet into their service center and drop it off. The reason all of this has to be is because we live in a condo and cannot have a satellite dish. This would solve my problem if we could have a dish here at home.

Seems to me there is a Federal law saying Satellite dish receivers have to be allowed. Do not think your Condo can stop the dish being placed. Might call Dish or Direct and ask them about this.

In many areas it has been determined that a condo can NOT prevent you from mounting a satellite dish to service your unit. Check it out.
Dish also has a relatively new pay as you go RV program.

Bob,

We had this exact issue with DirecTV for about a year. Until we realized that the DirecTV system we have in our 2008 Intrigue is owned by us! We bought the Coach with the equipment installed from the Country Coach factory. It is not leased from DirecTV it is owned by us. So, if you purchased any Coach that has the equipment in the Coach when you purchased said Coach you own the equipment and Direct MUST and will turn off your quipment whenever you want and as many times as you want without any charges or penalties. The magic words here is "YOU OWN THE EQUIPMENT" If you don't own it then you will have to abide by their polices and contracts. I hope this assists you with you issue.

D. Smith:

Thank you very much for your furnishing me with this information about owning my own satellite receiver equipment. My coach did not come from the factory with a satellite dish but shortly after taking delivery of it I had Advance Satellite in Junction City, OR install a MotoSat dish. I just called Cal that installed it and he confirmed what you are saying that DirecTV must suspend my service if I own the equipment. I then called DirecTV and after some discussion with two different people in their customer service (the first lady had such a foreign accent, I could not understand her), they agreed to continue the suspension until November. The $95 per month that I am saving may not be much for some people but it really helps me make the payments. I appreciate your giving me this information. I owe you one. Hopefully it will help others as well.
