Hurricane hydronic heater

Need suggestion about my hydronic heater. 2002 Intrique #11422, the unit flames out after a short period if I can get it to run at all. I have opened up the side and end where the igniter is and that helps get it started but won't keep operating. Have connected a external fuel source and it still flames out after a minute or two. Been told by that I need to replace the fuel line yet it seems to draw ok from the external source. Any suggestion are appreciated. Repair source experience in Eugene Or would help too. Tried Country coach twice with this heater and they charge a lot of money and problem not fixed so not going back. Thanks Mike

Michael,

A common problem I have had with Hydronic unit has been the air compressor in the unit. The diaphram seals are sensitive to diesel fumes and break down and fail to seal, ergo no air to the flame. Pull the outlet line from the pump and see if there is any air pressure when you jump it to 12 VDC.

When was the last time you replaced the nozzle? If the unit has set over the summer, the nozzle can be clogged. Another thing to look at is the "eye". This senses the presence of a flame to keep things running but it can get dirty. Clean it with a cotton swab and alcohol. You could also have a bad fuel pump. I think those within our serial number range had some bad pumps, I have replaced mine. Watch the fuel filter on top of the unit, you should see the fuel pulsating in it. The fuel line issue, don't worry about it. I still have the original. Do you still have the cute little chrome air filter on the top of the unit? Get rid of it, it is not needed.

For service, Carrier & Sons is good.. You can also call Rixens and get some good trouble shooting help. At this point, I'd bet on either the nozzle or fuel pump.

I went through all that has been mentioned in the previous messages. With no luck.
Turned out be minute debris (two VERY SMALL particles of black "dust") from a disintegrating fuel line inside the Hurricane, restricting fuel flow to the injector.
It was easy to fix with simple tools. The difficulty was finding the cause.

You might try cleaning the nozzle with non-flamable brake cleaner and compressed air and replacing the "distributor" O ring inside the nozzle assembly. I've been told that unlike the high pressure Aqua Hots, these low pressure Hurricane nozzles should last forever with proper care. I have also fixed similar symptoms with a new fuel pump or even a new fuel filter if you're lucky. I've had to change the air compressor in the past, but it wouldn't start at all then.
