Posting Message Replys - A consideration for all

Hi Coach Owners,

Lee Z. has made a good point about replying to the group which goes to about 3000 or more.
Since most all subjects, especially technical ones, have been covered many times, why not respond to the poster directly by using the envelope icon to provide a personal response.
The envelope icon is after the poster's name on the user group web site (yahoogroups.com)or in this - http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Country-Coach-Owners/post.
Thanks for your consideration,

Fred Kovol

Fred,

I've been trying to use that envelope and the mail doesn't go through. Roger just e-mailed letting me know he didn't get my mail. Try it and see if it works, there may be a problem on my end.

Another Viewpoint

I learn a lot from the back and forth. Not everyone has been on this site for the last 10 years which is pretty obvious from some of the postings; ie PTO failure. If I am not interested I know where the delete button is located.

Thanks, Dan. I agree. There are so many people who have so much more knowledge than I do, and I am very grateful to learn from them even if I've read some of it before.

I vote for both ways. I've learned things from Posts that have been posted before, new perspective, new inputs from new folks. I usually don't post more then 1 or 2 responses and cover more details with the email.

I think this is a bad idea, it defeats the purpose of a group. I want to see as many replies as possible. Some replies are more applicable to my particular situation than others.
The search engine for the group is not that great.
What might work is if a few volunteers made a book of current solutions to various problems and if so then promote looking there first.
PS I get this in digest form and scan the problems. I sometimes only look at a few of them.

To those who made the last three posts, it appears you have missed some detail on the original situation.
First, let me say that I agree with you three 100% that all the replies that contain content can be most valuable. No debate there.
However, the original post that started this thread was a different situation.
Here was the situation. A member (Member A) sent a personal email to another member (Member B). Member A then posted an email to the whole 3,000 of us saying in essence, and I paraphrase, "Hey Member B, I sent you an email."
There was no content and it was of no value to we 3,000. This is the situation that Fred and I were referring to.

You can look it up.

I often learn about topics that I did not know existed, then next week when I discover the need, I remember the post with the answers.
Or, gee, that's a great idea I think I will try it.

DITTO! The open exchange of information here (vs private emails) is one benefit that makes this forum so invaluable. Yes some personal exchanges might be annoying to some, but I have no problem using the delete key. I would not want to degrade the usefulness of this board just because of a shortsighted bureaucratic ruling that is insensitive to what this board is all about.

To add to what you have said, a fresh approach to previously posted solutions is probably helpful, as well. I also like to see problems and solutions discussed on the board. Detailed private emails are valuable to the individual involved with the issue but then others aren't benefiting from the email exchanges.

Methinks, Dan, that your "viewpoint" is shared by most "members" of the forum...

Buck, I think you are right, also. We tend to re-spin a lot of topics, but I always learn something. It's easy to delete whatever you are not interested in or have heard before. For me (I'm still trying to set the clock on my VCR) digging back through the archives is a pain. Also, we sometimes get different slants and opinions from new members with different experiences.

While on this subject, please delete the replies to the replies to the replies when responding to a message. Make for much easier reading; especially on smartphones as many of us use in addition to our computers.

I have found what ever you post there is some one out there who does not like what you say or how you said it! So, I read and answer any post I think i can help. But I post to them not here. Dan 330498 Allure

Hi All - I still consider myself a newbie on this site, but wanted share my thoughts.

Quote
This site has helped my wife and I learn about our new/old Allure. It is the first board I check into at night (getting closer to retirement, so my thoughts are on getting the RV ready for On-D-Road:)!)
> The files, links, database, pictures, and search (though the search is not real easy - not a complaint, as it is a FREE service, and many people volunteer to make this board what it is), have saved me from problems/expense/confusion multiple times.
> I've detected very little of the flames, ego's, jerks, etc. - that can sometimes take over other boards. Sure, people have bad days. Long term members sometime are a bit more then candid with each other. But the majority of the members are here to help any and all.
> Their are a small core of people I've sent thank you PM's to - as they go out of their way to help. Some online, some have gone to PM's, especially on subjects that have been covered before.
> I've had a few of my questions answered by PM, with a link to the messages stream of earlier 'solving' of my problems. (I missed them during search.) I feel that is great, I also feel a response to the full board with that link, helps others that might be interested, and also missed it in a search.
> Social part of the board is tough. I email some board members from time to time. Some I've probably ticked off by doing so (sorry Jack N.). I feel private emails are the best way to have social interaction.
> I see this caution of message replys to be OK. Remembering it is going out to many, I try to think about what I post, before doing so. Is it better as a PM or email, or a post? Sure, fat finger sometimes, and everyone has to see my post.

And yes, the delete button is powerful.
I'll stop my ramblings. I want to again thank the many board members that go out of their way to help whenever they can. I want to thank ALL MEMBERS, as it is all of us that make a board. I especially want to thank the Admins. It's a balance between closing or deleting a post, and letting good conversation flow. Conversation is flowing now, and on many boards, this would have been closed and or deleted by now.

Making the board better, by from time to time reminders of: -Don't reply to a long string without cutting the redundant info (Learned this one by mistake, on a string I had started on my PTO confusion (wait, is that redundant - PTO and confusion? :)!). I usually now try to post just to the OP's post, or if embedded in a string, delete as much as I can.
-Use the search.

-When posting a problem for help, report back final problem cause and fix.
-Keep from being too thin skin. Some of you write very well. Some like me, have trouble forming the words (possibly being too long winded from time to time). Posted many times on many sites, the words do not show the smile or a frown - just reading words, can be tough sometimes.
My sincere very best to all. Having fun, including learning form this board.

Be safe, have fun,
Smitty
