How Much HP Is Enough...Too Much=Never! !

Recent Post of: Horsepower - How Much Is Enough? ? ? . . . Too Much HP = Never ! ! A very experience luxury coach salesman, Paul Jefferies, once said the general rule of thumb is 100 hp for every 1,000 coach Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
Example our '01 x 36 ft Intrigue has a GVW of 33,000 lbs. with a 350 Hp (ISC) engine, which is O.K. now that does not consider the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (including towed vehicle).
So add our 3,900 lb. towed pick-up & we might be a little short on Horses, So that 370 hp ISL Cummins would be the perfect engine.
Better than that would be the 400 hp version.
but we can still pull a 6 mile long 6% grade hill at 42 mph, what is the rush?? we are retired..
I've seen a couple of 32 ft. with 400 HP ISL engines, what a Hot Rod those would be! ! Maybe having a little driving stability challenges.

Don't seem long ago that we all thought 200hp was great. Then 300hp.
What's happened? Are the hills getting bigger?

350hp will do me fine. I'm not in a hurry anyway.

I thought my piddly little C10 with it's 385HP and 1350ft/lb of torque was doing OK until I started reading this thread... Have even been lucky enough to beat the "big boys" to the top of the hill a time or two... I reckon we both need to do some serious thinking about trading up to something with more horses...

For coach owners with C-13's "wine time" begins at 4:30 rather than at 6:15.

4:30 works for me too. Ruby-Red if you don't mind . . . which is a dominant color on our coach. White is OK too Buck, if that is what you like.

Buck, I'm sorry, but I think you misunderstood. I believe when Brad said "wine time", that is exactly what he meant. CC owners with the larger engines are usually off the road, set up and enjoying a glass of wine by 4:30. Enjoy.

I usually start after breakfast, end before wine time. How far I go or how fast I get there in between rarely matters to me. If I could get up over the pass five minutes faster would I be happier? Don't get me wrong I like power just not willing to "trade up?" for those five minutes.

My 98 Intrigue has a 325hp Cummins. It gets me where I need to go and I get good mpg getting there. From Georgia to California and back I averaged about 11mpg while towing my Dodge Intrepid with a tow dolly. I climbed the Cajon Pass on I-15 in Calif. at 45mph. That was good enough for me.

I have a 330 HP in a 2000 Allure and yes i am in the right line going up a hill. My MPG after 70,000 + Miles is 7.3 MPG. The same as it was with 7,000 miles. Ak. To Key West, FL. Maine to Old Mexico. It has always been 7.3 average. Dan 2000 Allure #30498

That was my Average when I ran 65mph with my 98 Allure 30255 with a ISC 330. But after all the issues

with small tires and then everyone missing a recall on the injection pump which caused it to finally fail

after 3 attempts to repair, as with smoother issues with crossover pipe sensors, my milage increased to
8.3 mpg and increased to over 9,5 and closer to 10 if I stayed at 55mph. At
the time my toads were

about 3900 lbs. The Allure was right at 37 ft. and weighed 30,800 lbs.
Getting the rpms down was the

answer for my Allure. My 04 with the the taller tires lowered the rpms more, and though the weight is

10,000 lbs, higher if I stay on the flat and level the Intrigue gets better milage at all speeds. I

contribute that to the improvement of efficiency of the 3000 world transmission over the 3060 for the Allure. (15% better). I've even average close to 7.8 mpg with the fan running a full blast when the

controller failed. Now that's been fixed our travels the last two weeks have yielded 8.6 mpg. With the

speed limits on the Left coast being 55 for RV and fuel just a hair under $3.99 every gallon saved makes

me feel better.

I also have a 98 Intrigue #10647 with a 8.3 Cummings, but I have never gotten more than 7.5 MPG always driving below 65 MPH. Is there something that I nedd to have checked or updated. I tow a Honda CRV as well. Any info would be appreciated.
