Hydro-Hot repair

You may remember that I reported that the Hydro-Hot in our 2004 Allure was leaking rather profusely. NW-CC-ers who were at Albany also probably remember.:-(

I also reported that I took it to CC in Junction City the day after the rally, and that CC told me that the whole unit needed replacement, at an estimated cost of $5500-$7500, depending on which replacement unit I would choose, the return of the core, and about seven hours shop time.
I abjured.:-(

Last Wednesday I took the coach to R Mechanic in Livermore. This morning I received a call telling me that my coach was ready (it had been scheduled for completion on the 11th, depending on parts availability.=-O

I went and got it today. The cause of the leak? The plastic fitting in the bottom of the tank, to which the drain pipe is attached, had failed. R Mechanic changed out the radiator cap (something I had been meaning to do), replaced the crappy plastic fitting with a brass one, tested the unit by letting in run overnight, and found no trace of a leak.:-)

It was about 90° today in Livermore. The gentleman who worked on the coach had it fired up and the air-conditioning working to overcome the coach's interior temperature An extra bit of thoughtfulness.
Even though there have been negative reports here about this shop, I stand by my recommendation. Your mileage may vary. I am also deeply disappointed by the Junction City shop, apparently only able to deal with more minor problems. I do believe that OMC will be my shop stop of choice when in the area.

BTW, the bill came to $483 and change.

Glad it worked out for you! We have been in the same boat on the road looking for good service at fair prices.
Another great resource for Aqua Hot/Hydro Hot repair is Roger Berke. He monitors the Hydronic Heating group. He does maintenance, repair, rebuilds and sells parts. We met him in Alburqueque. He is the Hydro Hot "guru" in our opinion. If no other alternative, you can have your unit removed and shipped to him. He did the best annual maintenance on our Hydro Hot ever! He is very knowledgeable, thorough and his prices are fair.

Just wanted to add our 2 cents about Roger. After spending a couple thousand dollars with people who said they could fix our Hydro-Hot and did not he did. He is the only one worth paying to touch either hydro or aqua hot that there is. He stays with the problem until it is fix and does not over charge. What ever you have to do, do it. We bought our coach in August of 2003 and have had working hot water only since he touched it spring of 2011.
