Sheridan to Cody

In Douglas, Wyoming today, Gillette tomorrow, then Sundance for a couple of days. From Sundance we plan to visit Sheridan and Big Horn, Mt to see the site of Little Big Horn/Custer's last stand. Then on to Cody, Wyoming for a few days. Has anyone traveled highway 14 or 14A from Sheridan to Cody? Looks tough but doable.

We have not traveled hwy 14, however, if you are going south from Cody you might want to use hwy 120 to 20 to Shoshoni, WY. It is a beautiful drive along the Wind River. We stayed in Riverton, WY. and went to see the grave claimed to be of Sacajawea. Big statue sitting on hill overlooking a valley near Landers, WY.

I haven't driven that area in several years but don't imagine much has changed.
14 is doable and very scenic over Granite Pass and thru Shell Canyon.
14A is not doable as far as I'm concerned, unless you're driving something in the size range of a MiniCooper.
Last time I drove 14A, I was in my van. Checked on an elderly couple in a small Class C who were petrified, waiting for a tow truck to bring a driver to get them down to flat land.
An example of how tight the turns and curves are on 14A, my dad always told about driving it in heavy fog following someone's tail lights. When he broke out of the fog, he realized they were his own tail lights. True story!:|

We have been staying in Greybull, WY since May and have have done Rt 14 over the Mts many times. Like a previous responder, I think 14 is very doable. Would not advise 14A. We are at the KOA in Greybull and have seen a number of rv's and van limp in with no brakes. The trick is to use your jake and the transmission to keep you at the correct speed. It is a beautiful ride and worth the effort.

Back in August of 05 not knowing any better (taking the scenic route) we drove the 14a route using our 36' Winnie Chieftain yes a pusher 275hp, we were pulling a 30' trailer loaded with a Jeep & a Harley. Stopped along the way made diner for the family the evening was perfect, proceeding along 14a reached the beginning of the pass, noticed a road sign stating steep grade proceed with caution, never having seen a sign that says "steep grade" I was a little concerned (normally one would see 6% grade etc.). Yes I had the opportunely to turn around however I didn't, thinking like most, didn't want to double all the way back to 14. To make matters worse the sun was setting and getting dark (we were to find out possibly better in the dark because the road was scary at night, thinking not seeing the shoulder or lack thereof was a good thing). The one thing I remember most was looking up in the dark sky and seeing lights wondering what in the world could that be, well come to find out miles later it was traffic coming down the pass, realizing where we were heading was very scary. Anyway made the pass to tell the story, no issues.
Sorry for the ramblings when I saw this post it brought back memories, 14 is the route I would choose, beautiful none the less. Would I drive the 14a route today in my CC Inspire? don't think so, however a great memory.
