Frame welding

Has anyone had any arc welding done on his or her coach? I have a 2002 intrigue and was warned by a fellow country coacher that arc welding may foul up the electrical circuits and cause other issues. Thank you in advance.

Yes, that is true. On my coach there is a warning in the coach battery bay. You must disconnect the ECM & ECU modules. If not you could damage them.

We had the radiator support strut welded on our coach this spring. Disconnected all batteries and that was it. When we reconnected them I had to reset the rear view camera and the low voltage reset on the Aqua Hot. The shop was very experienced with this type of job and assured me disconnecting the batteries was sufficient to protect everything. I was a bit nervous about it but it worked out fine.

I have done a lot of welding on my coach without ever disconnecting the ECM or battery. Not that I think it is advisable to do what I have done though. I am sure the reason for the warning is that if you did not have a very good ground or you grounded or arc'd to a wire going to the ECM you would instantly have a very expensive problem.
Don't ground or weld on or near coach wiring and make sure you have a very good ground located near where you are welding. I use mig welders not arc (stick) welder for more accuracy.

In 2006 Country Coach welded on my 2005 Intrigue and took out the ECM for the Cat engine. Again, there is a warning in the house battery bay telling you to disconnect the ECM & ECU and to disconnect the batteries.
