No power , black smoke at the exhaust

Yahoo Message Number: 73872
A strange thing happened today. Returning from fueling the coach I stooped at a traffic light with my parking lights on. The light changed, stepped on the throttle and there it went, black smoke and no power. This was strange, I turned off the running lights and she took off with normal power. Does any one have an answer to what coursed this.

Dick,

Your problem could be an intermittantly stuck butterfly valve in the exhaust brake.

Dick, I had a similar occurrence some years ago with an 8.3 powered coach I owned. I say similar because the running light were not involved. The problem was a stuck closed exhaust brake.
In your case the running lights may have been a coincidence. ALso, there may be a grounding problem that is sending a signal to the brake lights or exhaust brake switch. I suspect that later.

Good luck.

Do you have a PAC Brake? If so, has it been lubricated with a high temp lube or PAC Brake lubricant? I suspect that is your problem. The light switch you turned off may have been the PAC Brake switch.

O well, never a dull moment. Thank you for the help. I do have a Pack brake, and I had it on approaching the the traffic light, but turned it off when I stopped. The parking lights most have been a co incidents. I did lube the brake whit a Teflon based spray some time ago. The high temp lube you gents mentioned, is it spray or reg lube type?
