Shocks Straps

Yahoo Message Number: 75744
Since I'm a new owner of a CC and now reading about some models having a problem with the shocks extending too far and having a failure with the system. Is this associated with tag axles only? Certain years model only? Or is it something that you just have to be careful with on dips, construction zones? I did a quick search on IRV2 but there was not a lot of info about it there. So I'm just looking for info as we all do. Those with the problem and fix are our best info provider.
Thanks

Dave

As you can see in this thread, I have not yet added straps to our rig. I will in the future, but did not see it as an immediate need. With a bit of caution, the risk of over extending shocks, can be minimized.
From what I could gather as I was learning the in's and out's of our rig (we've had bit over 18 months now), two main usages of the leveling system, can add to the risk of over extending.
1) On very uneven grounds, auto leveling, if the rear has to raise too far to reach level. (To minimize this I: 1) Dump air before leveling 2) Avoid sites that require significant rear end raise during leveling.
2) Sometimes while maneuvering, the manual raising of the rear end is required. Like when going up the approach to an incline (Don does this each time he goes to his lot in the mountains.). I have had to raise our rear end to clear mild ground obstacles, while moving in/out of sites. (I avoid raising the rear too far (a judgement call, but so far so good). If I feel a maneuver requires too far of a raise of the rear - I move on.)

The other input about raised Tag's caution is very good to consider.
Yes, I also agree with other posters here, and on other sites, that this was a design flaw by CC. They should have recalled and installed straps on any rig that had a potential of a problem. As that will not happen now, no reason to dwell on it. I also was not pleased that this will limit the amount of leveling capability, but it is what it is.
One other factor on my not being as concerned, is the addition of the Road Kings. They are just that much more robust of a shock, the size of the pistons, and shafts, are much more substantial then other shocks. Not that I want to take a chance to damage them, but I do feel the Road Kings might give me a bit of a safety edge.
For those with questions, if you do not find your specific coach mentioned on this board via search (Where you can find out if you have a concern or not. As Lee mentioned, not all CC's have a problem.) I would suggest a call or email to OMC. They have the knowledge to update you on your specific rig. They can also probably provide you with the appropriate strap for you application.

Best to all,
Smitty

our 2008 Allures rear shocks broke almost immediately, about 2000 miles.. I replaced all the KONI shocks with Road King and have not had a problem since. Also the ride is much better.
