HydroHot Electric Cartridge Heater

Hi,

Quick question. Has anyone here replaced the electric cartridge heating element in their HydroHot unit?? Mine popped the breaker this morning which I believe indicates a short in the element to ground. I'd imagine it's corroded. I was wondering how accessible the cartridge is and what difficulties (if any) will be encountered trying to replace it. Any information about replacement parts would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance to anyone coming forward and sharing their repair experience.

Scott,

You might try disconnecting the element and resetting the breaker before going too far. Just to confirm it's the element and not something else.

I have seen Roger Berke say that the Elec. elements rarely if ever go bad. Did you contact him about your problem?

Richard & Barney,

Thanks. I will look deeper into this tomorrow with my VOM to establish if there is a short. Right now I'm stabilized with a few space heaters to keep the plumbing bay from freezing overnight. Weather is due to warm a bit into the 30s so I can work on it then. Most of these repairs go towards the worst. If this is an easy fix it will be a first. Thanks. I'll report back with findings in case someone else has a similar problem.

Yes my diesel burner quit this morning as well. It was this failure that led to me turning on the heating element. It warmed the water for about a half an hour then popped the breaker. Tomorrow is another day so I'll get into it then. I took a look in the electrical box that powers the heating element and didn't see anything wrong. There is a relay in there which might be a solid state unit. Perhaps that's shorted out. Some resistance measurements with the VOM should shed some light on what's gone bad.

As for the diesel burner, the motor doesn't come on anymore. I hear some clicking in the control box which means it's trying to start. Perhaps the motor is shot. I know it isn't the control box because I replaced that with a new one last year. Over and out for now.

Scott, Could it be Low on Coolant? , there is a Float Switch that cuts off the unit when it is low on coolant, Check the plastic jug, but also remove the Cap on the Tank,(when it is cool). and check the level there also. Boiler anti-freeze is recommended for coolant., in an emergency if you need to you can add water, distilled, and then remove enough fluid later to add the anti-freeze, just make sure you are not in danger of a freeze in the area you are located... This is just my thoughts...#31459

Coolant is OK. The high limit thermostat was shorted to ground. From those in the know, it's a common problem. I've since scored the parts and fixed the electric heater. I've taken some photos and will document the repair soon and post a link here for others facing a similar problem. Overall it went pretty well. Thanks for your input.
