Greasing driveshaft

Yahoo Message Number: 76779
Just greased my driveshaft. Have a question. I put five or six pumps of grease in the universals, and some grease starts oozing out from around the seals, and I stop. But the slip joint, I pump and pump and finally quit, and never is there any grease coming out. How much grease should I put in there?

My slip joint has taken as much as a half a tube before I saw greese comming out the weep hole. Just keep pumping...

Is the u-joint cross drilled so that I only have to grease one of the two grease fittings.

Yes, mine is, but make sure you get grease out of each of the four bearings. If not, you might have to put the grease gun on the other fitting. Or, you might have to loosen the stubborn bearing until it takes grease.

I had the same question recently. You really have to pump a lot of grease in. However, I had my coach in the high position so I could get underneath, thus extending the spline shaft. When I let it down, the shaft retracted and squeezed out a lot grease around the seal making a pretty good mess after the coach was driven.
Now that I know it is full, next time I will put in abut four shots.

Larry, where is the weep hole? I have now pumped 80 shots of grease in there, and nothing is coming out. I had to stop, because laying on your back holding the grease gun up there and pumping cold grease is hard work!

As I recall, mine is on the outershaft. You might need a mirror to locate it. Seems like "80 shots" would be enough? I use an airpowered grease gun.

OK, but i gotta wonder why you didn't see grease coming out somewhere. Makes me question the integrity of the grease gun. Are sure the grease gun is actually forcing grease into the fitting? Eighty pumps seems like it would almost empty a tube?

The splines take a LOT of grease. There is not really a seal and that thing spins really fast.
