Awning covers flapping when traveling

On the drive from Junction City, OR to Greensboro, NC and the drive from NC to the Rio Grande Valley, TX there were numerous occasions when the awning cover over the living room slide out on the driver's side and the awning over the bedroom slide out on the passenger side flapped when we hit gusts of wind. Sometimes the gusts were fairly strong, other times they were reasonably weak but quartering wind. We were driving 65 and less and even slowed down to 55 to no avail. The awnings never completely unraveled, but they certainly had us worried that they would. They have even flapped when we were parked and the gust were quite strong. I don't understand how the wind would lift the edge of the metal (aluminum) enclosed awnings. It was difficult to see exactly what was happening because the flapping only last a few seconds and I was trying to watch the road and the upper part of the outside mirrors at the same time.
Has anyone else experience this problem? If so, how did you solve it?
I know the automatic awnings over the windows and the main patio awning are Girard, but I don't know who made the covers and awnings over the slide outs. So, I don't know what mfgr. to asks for help.

I have a 2002 Allure and have a Zip Dee awning on the living room slide. I had the same problem traveling between Las Cruzes, New Mexico and Tucson. I found out that I had to take off the bracket of the front side of the awning, unwind it, counting how many times it went around and tighten it back up 3 or 4 more times than I unwound it. If it is a Zip Dee then call the factory to find out how many times to wind it back up.

In my other MH, it did exactly what yours did. I tell you the first time it did it, it was a loud bang as it returned to it position. I could not stop quick enough. My mind was trying to think everything that it could be wrong or what went wrong. We happened to stop out in the desert of SoCal and the wind at night, again caused the awning to pull away from the coach and slam back. I'm not sure if you can solve it, short of securing it somehow to the coach. I did not think it would cause any damage to the coach, it was just unnerving when it happened, either moving or sitting at a camp site. I'm sure other with a lot more time in the MH will give you ideas on how to stop it. Dave

Jim,

These awnings are no Zip-Dee and come out of an "enclosure"? rather than just have the aluminum slats on the end. I had the same problem you had with my 2000 Allure and rewound it I believe 39 times (37 or 39). Zip-Dee warned me then that a strong quartering wind (like you can get when traveling in the west) when driving can make it happen even when it is tightly wound. These awnings have a cover over them that may be the culprit. I can't tell if it is just the covers or the awnings themselves that are coming out. I don't know who made the awnings that go out over the slides, but the noise they make when they flap is quite unnerving.

I have had the same problem with the Driver side over the slide Zip Dee awning. I found some large metal scew type bands (Sewer hose) I can put them around the front of the awning from a ladder and do this when ever I have to travel with wind blowing. I have seen a after market fix by Stanley Stainless Products. It is a L-Bracket that is mounted below the awning and routes the wind around the bottom of the awning. I been told that the fix works.

hey Gene, i have an 06 affinity and had the same problem as you. i bet you have Garard slide toppers like i do. (garard window and slide topper, zipdee patio awning)...contact Garard, they have a fix for the covers popping open in a crosswind....its basically a bracket that is attached with 2 screws that physically holds the cover closed and is easy to install with a drill and screwdriver.....
