Dish and/or Direct

I know this has been thrown around several times, but this is a little different (hopefully). I recently purchased our CC and it currently has 2 direct H20 600 receivers. I have Dish at the stick home, with an extra standard HD receiver. I have made several calls and emails to Direct, asking to start service, but I only want new cards...NOPE...they only want me to get new equipment including an antenna. Told them NOPE...it for a MH, I do not want it nor do I want to store it. I even tried to speak to a supervisor, got the same answer.

Looking at the manual that came with the Direct for the boxes I have, it appears that that the H20 600, I have in the front and rear are not dual type receivers. So, I assume that that the system I have in the coach, you can watch 2 different channels one in the front and one in the back, Can I assume that? Can I assume that the Satellite antenna that is on the roof has the capability to receive 2 different channels? Now for those who have changed or upgraded their systems in the MH. Since I'am already into a contract with Dish, I would like to just purchase another box for the front, maybe with a DVR. But can the system/antenna handle the new box with a DVR? Do I need to upgrade the roof antenna? I sure I will have more questions as the answers come in.

Hi Dave,

You don't say which antenna you have on the roof. That will dictate what you can receive. The only antenna that will receive DirecTv HD at this time is the Winegard SK-3005 TRAVLER. It also supports up to 4 TVs or two DVRs. If you have a dome antenna you can only get DirecTv standard definition.
You can probably get HD with Dish again depending on the antenna you have. It would also have be a dual feed unit to get different channels on the two TVs. I would think since you have two receivers now that you have a dual feed antenna on the roof but maybe not. Can you see a name on the antenna? Any documentation in your coach regarding the system you have?
I recently changed out my Track Star antenna to the above Winegard because I have DirecTv at home and wanted HD in the coach. Just $6.oo a month extra for this.

By the way. It's my understanding that if the two DirecTv receivers in your coach were factory installed you own them (they are not rentals) and DirecTv should authorized them for you without any hassles.

I do not dis-agree with you about owning the receivers...but the people I have spoke with at Direct, only have one language, sell, sell, sell...

Regarding my Satellite Antenna...according to my manual I have a TracStar SV360 According to the manual, it explains about "Direct" using 3 satellites...101, 110HD and 119, and the system will allows the owner to choose 2 satellites, 101 and/or110HD or 101 and/or 119.
They say that most of Direct's programming is on 101. It does not say in the manual how many LNB's I have it does say that my unit does not have 3 LNB's as a stick home would have.
It also says that this unit should receive virtually all HDTV Channels..Thats a good thing..

The info in your manual is out of date.
Direct put up new satellites on a different "band" for HD which no dome can receive today.
Most domes have only one LNB, which means you can point to one satellite at a time. You can watch more than one channel as long as they originate on the same satellite.

Dang..KILL the Messenger...only kidding..It looks like I will be having all sorts of fun getting this TV and stuff up and running...I will probably have to get a teenager who's failing in school to work on it to make it work..
Each satellite provider has said that they will send out a Tech to work on it...but it scary to to find out if they cant just plug it in and it works that they start adjusting the controls or using a bigger hammer to make it work....Thanks for the info..more for me to think about..

Dave,

Have you tried to turn everything on and see if it will find any satellites? You won't be able to view any programs but it should still find the satellites and tell you to contact DirecTv for programmimg if it's working.

Just a thought.

DIRECTV allows the activation of used receivers under the following conditions:

The used receiver cannot be active on another DIRECTV account The used receiver must be a previously owned unit; if the receiver was previously leased on an account it cannot be activated and must be returned to DIRECTV The receiver must have a Receiver ID Number; older models without an Receiver ID Number cannot be reactivated because they do not support DIRECTV's current technology If you meet all of these criteria, call us at 1-800-DIRECTV to order a new access card. We'll then send you a new access card and a postage-paid envelope to return the old card. Please note that a $20 fee will apply for the new card.
Once you receive the new access card and have installed the receiver call us at 1-800-531-5000 to activate. Make sure to mention that you have pre-owned equipment and want to activate programming on it.
If you have 2 receivers you may be able to watch 2 channels. We just had to upgrade our dish to dual LNB and put in a splitter in the back to be able to watch 2 different satellite channels. Our Allure was not originally wired to do so. Neither did the SV360 Dish.
I would try to find a mobile satellite person that works on motor homes. Call TracStar in Orlando Florida and they might have a reference. They just gave us the name of someone in Houston that wired ours and did a great job at a reasonable price.
All you have to do to get DirecTV is get the existing cards activated or if you don't have the cards (in a slot in the front of the receiver) you'll have to get new cards from DirecTV (see above you can reference when you call them).
Our sat guy said that the only satellite we need to worry about in an RV is satellite 101. He said none of the other satellites matter any more. He also upgraded the software in our satellite controller box. It had not been upgraded.
Once you work out getting the cards, we can help with the rest.

My TracStar SV360 is HD and there are other brands that receive HD as well, so Wineguard is not the only answer for folks looking for a Sat system.

I agree your TracStar will receive HD but only with Dish Network. It will no longer receive DirecTv HD as it once did. What I meant to say was Winegard has the only roof mounted antenna that will receive all the HD content that DirecTv has to offer. If there is something else out there it is not widely available.

You should look at MotoSat. They have systems for both Directv and Dish. They are located in Salt Lake City . We have used their equipment on 3 different motor homes and have been happy.

Dave, Directv has moved their HD Channels to Satellite 99 & 103, the New MPEG-4 Satellites, which your older Dish does not have Access to. So you will only get SD Channels unless you Upgrade to a Wineguard or Motosat Dish which can Lock onto the Satellites 99 & 103 so you can get your HD Channels.
At this time there is only one Dish that can Access Satellites 99 & 103 and it is designed for a Yacht and is 3 feet tall and costs around $14,000 if I recall correctly. Also, an RV moves too Fast for it to be mounted on an RV and work correctly.

Hello Dave, I have an 06 Intrigue that came equipped with the TracStar antenna and a Direct Sat rcvr. Like you I had Dish Network at home and in my previous rig, so did not want to activate the Direct Rcvr and thus have two accounts with separate companies.
The TracStar antenna was an HD antenna and by all accounts is supposed to be an excellent antenna. I had TracStar convert my antenna from Direct to Dish (you just can't swap out one type of RCVR for that of another company). Like all Dome type antennea, the Dome is only capable of looking at one Satellite at a time, so when using it for Dish who have long used mulitple satellites to provide programming it kind of put you into a quandry if you wanted to view Dish Network on more than one television simultaneously, particularly if you wanted to view programming on both 110 and 119.
What I eventually did was to swap out the TracStar dome for a MotoSat stationary antenna that looks at all (3) three Dish Sat's at the same time. I then purchased a Dish ViP211K Sat RCVR. This rcvr is a dual rcvr that will provide independent programming to two separate TV's at the same time This way I physically have to have but one box to provide programming to two TV's.
The reason I purchased the Dish Vip211K is because I could not get Dish Network to to provide me with one as a leased version, without a Dish Tech installing it in my home. They absolutely refused to install the requested Rcvr in my motorhome. They told me that once the Rcvr had been installed in my stick built house I could do anything I wanted with the Rcvr, but it "had" to be installed first. After much arguing, I gave up and bought the Rcvr from Amazon.com. I installed it myself and had no trouble getting it activated.

It depends on what time of day you call Dish Network.
Sometimes they have an RV support department sometimes they do not.
Some reps will send a receiver to a motorhome some won't.
I have been full timing for almost 4 years with Dish Network and have experienced both.

I have had at least 3 receivers shipped to me, after being told I would need an installer to deliver and install them.
Persistence pays off.

For those of us with patience Dish is coming out with a new receiver in March that can record the 4 major Networks in prime time, plus 2 additional shows all at the same time and can display hi def on 3 TVs with the aid of a small extender box for TV 2 and 3.

As far as I know there is no In Motion Directv Dome Dish that will be capable of accessing the New MPEG-4 HD Satellites 99 & 103. There are stationary Dishes available thru Winegard and Motosat and others but they are Stationary and Not In Motion Dishes.
