Smartire Question

I have the Smartire 2 on my Allure which is great now I have the tire pressures correct and matching the programming.
The set up allows for my 8 wheeler coach and a 4 wheel toad, however I have a 2 wheel trailer which also has a sprare wheel on it; I had 9 and 10 sensors fitted to the main trailer wheels and 11 to the spare on the trailer, however the monitor is looking for the other wheel? This therefore has it in a semi permanant alert mode. Is there a way to get it to ignore the spare and its missing opposite wheel as the setup does not allow for a 2 wheel trailer?

Micheal I am not sure that I understand fully what the problem is.I assume when you have the toad on the system works right. When you tow the 2 wheel trailer , is when you have the problem. The Smartire is looking for 4 sensors in this mode and you have only 2 being activated by the wheels turning. The problem is 2 fold in this mode. The first is that the spare is not rotating. The sensors in the wheel have a sleep mode when parked, and the wake up after driving for a while. You may have a problem with that sensor on the spare not reading, because it does not get activated. Since the Smartire is programmed to look for 4 wheels, and when towing the 2 wheel trailer there is no possibility of sensing that 4th wheel and therefor should not be in the program . I would suggest that the only way around this is to reprogram the Smartire when towing the 2 wheel trailer. When I sold my toad, I had the sensors removed and sitting in the bottom of the coach, while going to get my new toad, and I ran into the same issue. The sensors can not be in the range of the antennae if not rotating. At one point , I had a toad and a trailer, in which I carried my toad. This confused the Smartire, for the reason stated. If I had either one within sensing range, I had no issue. The Smartire 2 can read 16 sensors. When the trailer , toad and the coach were within range,I had the same problem. When I changed to a new Toad that I only hauled in the trailer the problem went away.

The sensors are either programmed to the receiver unit to be sensed when system is turned on or they are not. The best way to change the programing is find someone who still has one of the bench/hand-held programming tools. There is more programming capability with one of those tools than you can do with the control panel in your coach. Some of the Camping Worlds used to sell Smartire systems and install them. They may still have the tooling for programing. Also, check with Bob Dickman Tires in Junction City, OR. They were a big supplier and installer for CC new installs as well as after market.

The previous owner had a toad, I use a 2 wheel trailer with a v small car on it. (A framing is a contentious issue in Europe so best to trailer). I therefore have placed 2 of the sensors in the 2 trailer wheels, with a third in the trailer spare. I do not appear to have an 8 wheel layout with a 2 wheel trailer option on my display, only 8 plus 4 so it sees the 2 trailer wheels as the that of the toad display and the third as one of the rears of the toad. Of course it is missing data from the fourth and reporting the problem. For the avoidance of doubt the car does not have any sensors in the tires as I do not A frame it behind the coach.
So do I remove the sensor from the spare and somehow identify the toad rear axle as dead, say 0 psi for example? What do you think? I do not grasp your explantion of the toad on the trailer, do you have sensors in the trailer and the toad?

It does seem that I will need to get one of thse programming tools (DPT) does anyone have one for sale they no longer use?

Micheal The Smartire 2 actually does have 16 positions available to monitor, but can only display 12. The theory is that you would either tow the trailer , or a toad , at any one time. The car in the trailer can not be the toad, otherwise you have the issue I described. In your case, since you tow the small car ON the trailer, the best thing to do is to delete the spare tire and the 4th wheel from the program. While I have not programmed the Smartire myself, I understand, that it is not that difficult. Either go to a Camping World that has a programmer, or call Paul at Les Schwab Tire stores in Eugene OR and he will likely help you. Les Schwab programmed all this for CC , as they are across the road from the factory.

Thanks Ron, unfortunatly I am in the UK so that precludes me popping into Camping World! If any one has one of these DPT units I would be grateful, even for a loan and I pay postage there and back?
