ProLong Idling of Engine

I've heard prolonged Slow RPM Idling of the engine is BAD. Butt. the Tech that did our predelivery said, "if we increase the idle RPM to 1000 RPM it is O.k for extended periods. For inflating the tyres from the onboard pressure tanks, how about doing it while the engine is coming up to driving temp before travel??? That idle time is there whether you inflate tyre or not??? Does that make any sense ???? Happy Trails

My manual says to idle 2-3 minutes before driving, which is hardly enough time to do much inflating plus putting the hose away, etc. Even if you have things ready to go when starting the engine.
That idling time doesn't bring the engine up to driving temp, either. I guess it just sort've stabilizes things to make sure it's gonna run OK as you accelerate away from a cold start..

Prolonged idling is not really bad for a diesel as long as your keep your RPM's up to about 1000. I've let my Prevost Detroit Series 60 run at my home for an hour alreay. We have a "hi-rpm" button which takes the idle up to 1000 rpm and disengages whenever you put it in gear to drive away. It's important to watch the engine temperature if you are not in a location whereby the engine air blowing thru the radiator is blocked in some way or another like inside a closed garage (with the exhasut of the engine being ducted outside via some form of hose). You can easily fast-idle your diesel and fill those tires.

Dick,

I believe that the extended idleing referred to in the manuals is when you are already running. Like on a highway, at a rest area, when pulling in to a campground or in a truck stop. When you are leaving in the morning from a cold stop you need to idle longer to get the engine and systems up to operating levels.

There is no need to idle the engine in the morning longer than to air up the suspension and air brakes. Anything more is wasteful, and usually of great annoyance to other campers.
