Air Dryer /Compressor Cycle Reduced - Long

Yahoo Message Number: 5797
My compressor had a cycle time of about every 45 seconds while traveling. Once the compressor unloaded, it would pop-off the dryer as designed. I connected an air guage to the aux tank and then drove the coach. This has no bearing on the two brake tanks that have the two guages in the dash. As suspected, the suspension was the cause of the air depletion in the aux tank causing it to ask for air about every 45 or 50 seconds depending on road conditions. The leveling valves are quick response valves and adjust almost immediately when deflected by movement from the road. The bottom line, the aux tank does not have the volume of air to handle the suspension for any duration. CC graciously furnished different leveling valves that had a delayed action, but because of different plumbing, rods, hardware, etc., I decided not to use them.

I added a 5 gallon air tank and plumbed it into the aux tank increasing the volume of air. The compressor now will cycle about every 5 to 7 minutes depending on road conditions. I just returned from a 3 week, 4900 mile trip and it really made a difference. My concern was wearing out the compressor prematuraly and Bendix agreed with me. I have less than 75.00 in the whole deal, but I do my own work.

I'll be glad to offer more detail if needed.

Tom,

Thanks for the best explanation yet on this problem, and how to fix it. CC should take this to heart. We have all had explanations all over the board.
Most CC techs have said the compressor is a "constant" operation model. We all know that is bunk. Every Cummins person we have asked has said the constant cycling is beyond what either the valve or the compressor was designed for. We will add the tank as you have done.
