Good questions. Yes the elbow is steel, yes you remove it (easy but messy) and have the fitting welded on. High pressure in the system so make sure you get a quality weld. You are correct on the dash AC question. This system can (did on mine) install an orfice in line with the pressure hose either on top at the valve or where the two hoses connect. This orfice will allow the fan to run plus or minus 400 rpm to accommodate this issue. I tached the RPM on mine and it ran from 382-406. I don't think you need high speed for the dash AC.

Lyle,

The welding part prompts a few questions.
 Did you remove the coolant elbow to drill the hole and weld on the fitting? I assume the coolant elbow is steel so could the fitting be silver soldered on? > The old controller had a feature that brought the fan up to high speed when the dash AC is turned on. My guess is the new valve you installed cannot do that but has to wait until coolant temp rises. Has this created a sluggish dash AC issue? > Thanks,
