An Example of using a mix of Pilot/Flying J and other fuel stations

Hi Coach Owners,

On a recent trip, here is what I experienced.
I start a trip with a full tank, leaving Santa Barbara County and head for Blythe CA and across the Colorado River, fill up at Pilot/ Flying J in Ehrenberg, AZ, in Phoenix head north at Exit 109 (I10) on the Sun Valley Parkway which turns east and head into Surprise AZ where on Bell Rd, Sam's Club and Safeway (diesel $3.669) battle it out on fuel prices. Take 303 north which bends east and junctions with I17 exit 221 and head north to Flagstaff. This is a no-traffic bypass around the northwest side of Phoenix. Now in Flagstaff on the east side of old US66 are two stations that have low fuel prices. Heading east on I40 at the AZ/NM border is the town of Lupton and on the north side at the last AZ exit is Speedys truck stop with low fuel prices. In Gallup, 16 miles to the east, just off old US 66 at Marguerite Ave south about one block is an Indian run gas station which consistently has low fuel prices. Heading towards Albuquerque is Acoma Sky City and closer to ABQ is Dancing Eagles for reasonable pricing. I bypassed FJ in ABQ and Phoenix. Heading up the I17 for Santa Fe, there is 2 reservations competing, first is San Felipe (Am Best) and just north is Santa Domingo Pueblo (diesel $3.629), in Las Vegas, NM, in town there are 4 stations competing. Finally Boise City, OK has 2 stations competing. I come back home with ferry tanks in one bay filled with at least 40 gal. for topping off the main tank for the next trip out of California.
Of note ? the Pilot/Fling J Frequent Fueler Advantage card gives a price reduction of anywhere from 13 to 17 cents from the posted cash price using a credit card. Example: Ehrenberg AZ, green neon sign read 3.859 cash and 3.919 credit and with the Advantage card paid 3.749 (5/31/12).
If no external filter is evident, I ask other customers if they have experienced bad fuel before I pump.

Fred I hope this is not a stupid assumption, but it looks as though you are filling up every 150 miles !! At even 6MPG , that is only 25 gallons of fuel used. Is that what you do ?

Hello Ron,

Fair question. In the example, stops were at Ehrenberg AZ and Santa Domingo, trip ended in Raton, NM, the return was Surprise AZ and Ehrenberg AZ. One way distance was 1220 miles. I filled the spare ferry tanks on the way back in Santa Domingo for use on trips in California.
When heading home to Anchorage, combined fuel is 215 gals.
