Zip Dee - Another problem

A few weeks ago we went through a part of Colorado with very gusty high winds and the Gally Slide Awning opened about one foot. I had to stop, level, extend the slide, get out my ladder and sort the whole mess out. The locks for the window extension were in place.
Got it retracted and all was well. I know there have been some owner fixes for the problem, but Zip Dee should offer a solution. Good Awning, but after having several, the Colorado on a previous Coach was easier to work with.

Your problem can probably be traced directly to CC's installation & not a design flaw. Zip-Dee does offer a solution. Zip-Dee states that the slide awning should have 28 turns of preload. CC only put 13 turns of preload in mine. CC should get the blame for not installing to factory specs. Mine has not unfurled since I put in the proper preload.

One awning brand over another is like arguing Ford vs Chevy. I have owned an A & E awning, a Carefree awning and a Zip-Dee awning.
The A & E worked fine. I liked the Carefree better, but it was new.
I find the hooking of the Zip-Dee arms a little awkward, but it only takes a few seconds to fit in holes(easier when the locks are left in unlocked position. I prefer the Zip-Dee over the other two brands, although they all worked fine. No experience with the Girard.

When I recently called Zip-Dee with a question, the service rep reminded me to "never use the locks when the awning is in the extended position". The small warning tag that states this is at the top of each lock and is difficult to see, especially for short people. Zip-Dee said that "using the locks in the extended position can/will eventually destroy the internal locking gears and eliminate the locking safety feature. Leave the awning unlocked when it is extended."

Thanks Steve,

Is the number of turns standard or do they have something different for each size? I may need to contact Zip Dee. I agree with you, the hook up is a little difficult, at times I need a step ladder for the rear and I'm 5'10". They are good quality though.

Wouldn't hurt to call Zip-Dee. I believe the 28 turns of preload was for all slide awnings though. It was the only awning I inquired about. The person I spoke with was very helpful.

The solution is to put some small velcro straps (that have buckles) down near the bottom of the two arms (holds the arms securely together). There are a pair of bolts that are located a few inches from the bottom that provide a convenient anchor point. The straps are available at a good price from the CC parts department.
