plumbing questions

Yahoo Message Number: 80040
I am having some plumbing problems and am looking for a place to start, When hooked up to shore water, water will automatically goes into fresh water tank and overfills as seen by water leaking from the overflow. This happens with the pump off. The other problem is the pump runs all the time when using fresh water tank it cycles on and off. I have been unable to find a leak in or under the coach._ With the pump on, it will run all the time shore water is being used, switching auto fill valve as no effect. Is there a check valve for shore water? If so where is it. The pump is a on the demand pump so there must be a leak....right?

Vick it sounds like your transfer valve is passing water all the time. That is the valve that you flip when filling your water tank and then flip back when done. If it leaks into the tank when closed then the result is as you described.

Lyle,

I just had the coach in for service and reported a water leak they changed a 90 degree shut off valve and the transfer valve looks like a new one. I am not sure that explains the pump cycling when using fresh water tank as source. I seem to remember that when filling the tank from shore the pump ran and when you change back so shore would be source it quit. Does that sound right? Mine runs all the time in either position of transfer valve.

Vick,

When I had the same symptoms, pump cycling when no water is being used and tank filling by itself, it turned out to be the pump. When the internal check valve in the pump starts failing it allows water to run backwards thru the pump. So, when using the pump, pressure leaks out thru the pump causing it to cycle and when hooked up to city water, water leaks thru the pump into the tank. Unfortunately, my pump was not repairable and had to be replaced.

Greg and Lyle,

Thanks for the help! I am thinking the water pump may be the culprit. It was replaced a couple of years ago, but the tank has gone dry several times from a leak and I have heard pump running. I will take it to the experts at Fountain RV tomorrow.
