Over night in Durango Co

Yahoo Message Number: 80373
We are traveling and will be in Durango Colorado this weekend. We are not sure what campground to stay in and would like to spend one night in Wal Mart or another business while we check out the facilities.
Has anyone stayed in one of the business over night , and do you have any suggestion on a campground.

Any ideas for camping or things to do would be appreciated.

Thank You

Stan - I stayed at Alpen Rose RV Park in Durango and loved it - but as far as a Walmart, the only one close by is Cortez on Main St. jan

There is a Walmart on the south side of Durango and one in Farmington NM as well. If you have a tow the drive from Durango to Ouray would be a great day trip. You could also go to Mesa Verde west of Durango.

Cliff - I beg your pardon - you are absolutely correct - past the car dealerships is a Walmart across from the Tarpley RV Repair place....

We also stayed at Alpen Rose a couple years ago and enjoyed it. We had a space on the end of a row (can't remember the #) and had a huge lawn for our yard. Our Goldens loved it. We checked out the other parks while we were there and would probably stay at AR again.

I was out in the open, shadeless area, but if I went back there again, would request to be in a spot back behind the office or by the pool -

Alpen Rose on the north side of town. Great place. And for Ouray, drive it in the motorhome if you want. We did it about 10 years ago from Ouray to Durango in oour CC Prevost 40'XL towing, if memory serves me correctly, a 4dr Chevy Tahoe.

Folks,

Be aware Durango Walmart does not allow overnighters. Alpenrose is a great stop as is the United CG on the north edge of town (D&SNGRR runs right through). Can't speak for overnighting in Cortez or Farmington. We live in Durango so have been aware of the policy of overnighters.

Bob and Joan are great people and will help you anyway they can at the Alpen Rose. My favorite non

large rig site is 25, which at the end of an upper row, but my 42' fits nicely. The problem with United is access if you are over 38'. I enjoy the train as I was an ambassador for the RR when Charlie Bradshaw

bought it from the Rio Grande in the early 80's.. Durango is a fantastic place. We love walking

Downtown, Glider rides, RR, the Restaurants and the Bar D a western entertainment highlight. The RR

has a great museum. Driving to Silverton is a lifetime experience by car or RV. Its a fun place, too.

Ouray on the other side of Red Mountain Pass is a great place. Rent a Jeep and drive all the trails. There

are many great books written about the area, the silver and gold mines, the railroads, the people, the

geography, flora and fauna. We hope to be there for most of September and early October. Our favorite

time is "Color". Usually the last two weeks of September and the first week of October, when the Aspen

displays that wonderful golden color with the other trees in contrast to the Evergreens. If you like to

hike, go fishing , horse riding, there some challenging golf courses. or are a photographer this is the

place to be. Thomas W. Insall JR 2004 intrigue 11731. NO parking at Walmart!

We are currently parked at the Ignacio Casino - about 18 miles SE of Durango - great little campground with 24 sites and full hookup for $27. We are here one more night then off to Chama or some other place - Problem with Durango right now is a fire called the Weber fire that started yesterday - RTE 160 from Durango to Mancos is now closed - we can see the fire clouds from our spot - not sure of the air quality in Durango - Yesterday they had the streets closed in Durango for a "Spyder" convention (a 3 wheeled motorcycle) and it was followed by the Gay Pride Parade -

We are currently parked at the Ignacio Casino about 18 miles south of Durango on RTE 172; There is a Walmart on the west side of town. There is a fire in Weber Canyon south of Mancos - RTE 160 between Durango and Mancos is closed because of the fire. We can see the smoke from the fire so don't know about the air quality in Durango. The campground at the casino is nice full hookups and $27 a night - we will be here one more night.

We are also in the area, staying last night in a casino rv park just south of Cortez. We are blocked from getting to Durango by a wild fire near Mancos on Hwy 160. We have reservations at Ridgeway State Park so we will default to Hwys 145 and 62 through Delores and Telluride and on to Ridgeway, then come back through Ouray, Silverton and Durango on our return to Arizona next weekend, fires permitting.

Sounds like we could start a CC party in SW Colorado.

The ROADS aren't as bad as 101 from Crescent City to Brookings, Or. or Hwy 29 into Calistoga, Ca or

even some of the road from Florence to Eugene and shutter to think about Hwy 1 in California and yet I

see big rigs all the time along the coast. I will say its a marathon to drive from Cortez to Durango

around the loop. You had better plan to start early, take a break i n Ridgeway, or make it a two day

event. TAKE YOUR TIME AND ENJOY SOME OF THE BEST SCENERY IN THE LOWER 48.

Stuart, the road through Ouray is very difficult for a motorhome.

Actually I have done Hwy 550 before and love the adventure. I guess I get off on stuff that makes my wife shudder, like no guard rails and sheer cliff drop offs on the edge of the road. But then I love Hwy 1 in California too.
Am at Walmart in Cortez and just heard that 160 is open through Mancos on to Durango, but it is very smokey. May still do the other route up to Ridgeway just to avoid that. It is only 115 miles. Pow-wow in 10 minutes when wife gets out of that store. (Make that 30 minutes!)

I am enclosing a photo I hope you can download. Its a sign on the River road between Santa Rosa and

Napa Valley. I guarantee you don't see anything like that in Colorado.
There's is even a better one but I haven't figured out how to stop and take a picture with out being run over.

The other one is a 12% grade sign.

We too are in the Durango area having left Haviland Lake Campground yesterday. That is a US Forest Service facility north of Durango and south of Silverton on US 550.
We are now at Wolf Creek Run Resort in Pagosa Springs CO. Drove through some really dense smoke yesterday. We'll be here until Thursday when we leave for Taos. Then on to Santa Fe Skies for all of July and August.

Z Man,

Having lived in the mountains of colorado for most of my life, I have driven many big rigs with trailers, boats, trucks, etc. over the Million Dollar Highway (550) form Ouray to Durango.
It is really a nice drive for those who are good drivers (3 speed Jake is nice) but certainly not for really old folks or those who are not comfortable in mountain driving. Enjoy!
